Circular Segment - Radius Platen

Hey guys,

The steel is here (152 pounds of A2), and the cutters are here. I just need the machining center to free up so I can run them. I'm making room in my little shop for another machining center, so I should have something open soon.

Thanks
Nathan

Nathan,

Would you make me a flat platen so that the holes will match and I can swap it with the curved one?

The platen on my old Wilton Square Wheel is about shot and I need to mount a new flat working surface anyway.

Thanks,

Greg

I'm not real cheap for one-off stuff, I do better with multiples. Sorry, but you'll probably be better served with a local shop to make an adapter plate.

I'll wait to get the curved platen and then just make one with holes that align with yours.

I had figured that you had the steel, would drill the same pattern and would heat treat with the others so that the only "one off" part was milling a flat surface on a rectangle.

If anyone else wants one sing out; then it won't be a one off any more.

Awesome stuff, awhile ago i passed on the mathmatical acronym......Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally,(he was in 7th grade) for runnin though simple alegbra formulas, before i typed this out i ran a quick test on him, and he said he adjusted it to Gladly, because we refer to parenthesis as grouping symbols now. Either way i was glad to hear he was able to establish the order of procedure through the use of verbage, and im writng down the horse story!!

No Chris, that sets a BAD precedent.
More people NEED to understand how to do this type of thing.
In our parent's and grandparents era, most people could, and we, as a nation, thrived.
I assure you metalworkers could.

And doing the math is faster, guaranteed.
Took me a grand total of 16 clicks, and my hand never left the mouse.
So what is that, less than 20 seconds from seeing the question to having an answer?
I do keep a shortcut to the Windows calculator at the very top of my start menu though.

Understanding basic geometry and trig is critical to modern metalworking.
We can all get there using software, but it take no knowledge or understanding to do so.
More people need to understand what, how, and why.

Completely agree that we should all have a good base in all that we do. I make all beginning knifemakers visiting my shop make a knife using only a file before ever using a grinder.
I feel having a good base is important, and half of what I say is sarcastic humor anyway and most who know me know that. I have to do trig, geometry in my day job all the time so tend to go the path of least resistance on what I consider a mundane task. While you came to your conclusion in 20 seconds I most probably came to my conclusion quicker using a cad program. What you consider important and what I consider important is merely a matter of perspective. Neither is wrong as long as we came to the right conclusion, Some make knives using only files some use more advanced tools. Some solve math problems using a calculator or pen and paper some use more advanced tools. Its all good.

So, the machine got open and I put these platens on. And after a day or two of heavy cuts in tool steel, the spindle (that had been making some noise here recently) gave up the ghost. So I sent the spindle out for rebuild and while I was waiting the new machining center arrived, so I tried moving the job over to it. It's actually just a little a Romi mini mill, and at barely three tons it just didn't have enough balls to do this particular job properly. So, to make a long story short, the spindle is rebuilt and the big mill is as good as new and cutting like a boss, so I'm almost done machining these platens. Took a while though huh?

I'll get them out to Peter's by next week and hopefully get them back a couple weeks after that. I went ahead and sent out the 36" platens that were already done, so they should be showing up any time.

Cool. Did you make some 60's or just the 36 and 48?

Nathan, I subscribed to the thread because I wanted to buy one or more of these. How do I go about placing my order?

Commerce here is Shoptalk is a big no-no. I'll make a "general announcement" thread here in Shoptalk and then start a thread over in the commerce area. Probably be a few weeks.

Nathan, I bought one of your 36" platens -- fantastic build quality! Please put me on order for a 48".

Well, since we can't talk about commerce, just remember that you are NOT supposed to set a couple aside for me because I DON'T want to buy them. ;)
