Civilian History

James,

I didn't even think about the AKTI only availability, I've had my little registration form filled out on my coffee table for almost a month now. 'Bout time to write that check and join. Thanks for bringing it up.
I'd rather not have organization-specific logos on my knives, especially the ones that are already unique in design, just a personl quirk. However, black caps or sweatshirts with a clean, simple AKTI signature(no gargantuan logo) would be very nice.
Thank you Sal for those specs, can't wait to see how they develop.

Thanks,
Ken

James,

I saw that anti car-jacking device on TV. Lightly toasted? Heck no! It looked like there were flame throwers on both side of the car. The test object was lit on fire!

Kinda reminds me of that "electric chair" anti car-theft device from Robocop II.

James- "Lightly toasted"? I think the more correct term would be "Kentucky Fried Criminal",at the very least a crispy critter. Thats like saying a woman is only "a little bit pregnant".

But only in SA- try that in the Peoples Republik of KKKalifornia, and you WILL do serious time/ pay serious money for denying some punk his civil rights.
Obligatory knife comment- I really like the Civillian in G10- just might take out a loan (read:consult wife) and add one to my collection.

Frederick - the tip is angled to be at the optimum angle for the point of the blade to pierce at the "point of entry" and continue piercing. This done with an arc type motion rather than an extending "stab type" motion. The area behind the tip is is designed to create as little "hang up" as is possible. "in & out" leaving a slash type cut. The large belly behind the tip is a back up of the cut, or can be used to create a slash as well. Far more effective for a defensive move than on offensive one. However, James Keating seems to have offered more uses for this blade than was originally planned. Naturally input from the masters is always appreciated.

Anyone with interest in the Civvie should see the historical info by W. Cassidy in the main forum thread "Our History...". Among other goodies, there's evidence Fairbairn turned away from straight stab knives and techniques and more towards slashing in the Cobra system and knife.

As I've stated in many past posts that I could never see a use for one of these things except for defense or the "fun factor". I finally went and purchased an aluminum handled ATS-55 bladed one and now I can see why Sal says to keep it and use it ONLY for what it was designed for, (personal defense).

First, this thing is not as large as I expected and it has the thinnest and most delicate tip on a folder, (or a fixed blade), I've ever seen. I can't believe that anyone who's ever handled one would even consider using it for pruning or anything else. This thing is not a "using" knife, (except I guess, for disembowlment).

If you want a great defensive knife and love, (like I do), Spyderco's quality and super sharp blades, and sometimes like the "fun factor" of unusual knives, it's a "must have". If you purchase it for anything else, you'll be disappointed.

The Civilian is the best knife for its stated purpose that I can afford, which is why I purchased one. I do not carry it regularly (i've only carried it once since I purchased it). I love the way this knife fits my hand. It seems to drop into place when I snap it open - a perfect fit for my hand. I will carry this knife only when there might be a need for it.

Jim, a question for you about the Civilian. Assuming you have held a Civilian, does it fit your hand well? My Vaquero Grande is a bit large for my hand, but I remember you saying the VG fits yours real well.

As Gene said, if you purchase the Civilian for anything other than its stated purpose you will probably be disappointed. It's a pure defensive knife.

My compliments to Spyderco on the Civilian. The quality is there and the design is perfect for the stated purpose. I plan to be the one in the "White Hat" if I ever have to use this knife. I hope and pray that I never will need to use it.
