Civilian or Sifu ?

I'd love to get both but my wallet won't allow, as for now.

Which one should I go.
For self-defense only, already got daily-carried utility blade.

Just for self defense?

Well, if I were unfortunate enough to have gotten myself into a situation where I had to use a knife to keep myself alive, I'd want the option of being able to stab, as well as slash, and you can't very well stab with a Civilian. Remove 3 pound slabs of flesh from the perp's body? Yes, but you still cannot stab.

Still, I'd go with the Sifu.

I have to agree with Kwaiken56, but with a proviso. If you're already in a jam, you weren't paying attention. The best depiction of a knife fight is a quote from an emergency room worker who said, "Usually both are cut badly, and at least one of them is drunk." The Civilian is just bizarre, and the Sifu is just too big, both to quickly retrieve from a pocket and to work close to the body without cutting yourself. You will need to slash and puncture, and I'd pick a Tanto, either a SOCOM or a CQC7-B. My first choice, however, would have been to pick a safer area..--OKG

I'd pick the Civvie for my mushroom harvesting tasks.

The Sifu's rather large and too intimidating for my taste...

I'll probably be able to answer this better when my sifu comes tomorrow. In the meantime from my experience with the spyderco military knife (same handle I think), I didn't really like the handle's thinness. If you look at all the posts I make regarding folders, I always bitch and moan about how tiny they are, or how thin and frail the handles feel. I don't know why I haven't bought the buck strider yet. But anyway, if you want a folder that might lie flatter and be easier to carry, then the civilian might be good for you. It is also faster to open when carrying it with the pocket clip--at least that was the case with the military.

Civilian, all the way dude. There is a longer thread on this same topic in the Practical Tactical Forum. My longer response is at the bottom of the list. The Harpy is a good albeit smaller choice (but legal blade length in most places)about 2 1/2 inches.
