CKCA members receive a monthly e-mail update detailing what's going on in the association. These updates include among other things progress and status on past, current and future projects, new member information and monthly finance reports.

So in light of keeping the general knife public aware of what the CKCA is up to, I thought we would share an overview of last month's update. Please feel free to comment, ask questions.

The CKCA will also have a display table set up at the Arkansas Show this weekend. CKCA calendars will be available and we will be accepting membership applications. Please drop by and visit. Look for our new table display. More portable than our old display which will allow us to easily ship it around the country to shows.

CKCA 2009 Annual Meeting/Banquet:

Our 2009 meeting will be held on Thursday Night May 28th. (Thurs. night before the Blade Show).

Last year we had quite a turn-out (about 40-42, I believe) and everyone had a great time, however we are not so sure last year’s restaurant could handle a larger crowd so we have moved the gathering to a larger facility / banquet room:

Maggiano's
1601 Cumberland Mall SE Suite 200
Atlanta , GA 30339-3162

http://www.maggianos.com/locations/detail.asp?unit_id=001.025.0200

Maggiano’s is located across the street from the Waverly Hotel and Cobb Galleria Convention Center. For menu and more information and go to:

http://www.customknifecollectorsassociation.com/Banquet.html

Larry Bailey has been busy putting together quite a program for us including the first CKCA Mini Custom Knife Show.

CKCA Mini Show:
Seven makers will each create a special knife to be presented for sale via drawing at our annual meeting/banquet.

The participating makers for 2009 are:
Russ Andrews MS, Burt Foster MS, Tim Hancock MS, Harry and Charlie Mathews, John White MS, Daniel Winkler MS and Charles Vestal.
We look for this to become an annual event with new participating makers each year.
We will post photos of these 7 knives on the CKCA website as they are completed.

Introduction of The Western Bladesmith:
Tim Hancock will introduce his new book “The Western Bladesmith” by David Darom. Both Tim and David will be on hand to give CKCA members a first look and answer questions on this wonderful book.

Collaborative Fighter to Benefit Prostate Cancer Research:
Collaborative Benefit Fighter and Sheath which proceeds will benefit Prostate Cancer research. This, I trust will be the first of many CKCA benefit projects. The project will be very similar to the Blade Forum Benefit Bowie charity that some of our members participated in that raised $7300 for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation and created much positive exposure for the custom knife industry.
This completed Fighter will be first presented during our CKCA annual meeting/banquet at this year’s Blade Show.

Russ Andrews MS, Jerry Fisk MS, Don Hanson MS, John White MS and Paul Long will collaborate on this first CKCA benefit piece. Don has already rough forged the 12” blade from a 2” round bar of W2.

We haven't worked out the details as of yet as far as whether the knife will be raffled or auctioned. The blade and ivory will be on display at our table at this weekend's Arkansas Show.

The CKCA First Slate of officers:

The CKCA board has nominated and elected our first slate of officers.

President: Kevin Jones

Vice President: Larry Bailey

Treasurer: Bob Starkey

Secretary: Lin Rhea

Most excellent. I look forward to hearing more about the benefit fighter.

Roger

The S/S guard to the benefit fighter has been fitted and rough shaped, and will be displayed with blade, tusk, and damascus collar and spacer blanks at the CKCA table in Little Rock.

This knife will serve a good cause, and we'll be hearing much about it , I hope.

My recommendation would be for the knife to be raffled, because I think it is possible to get a lot more money for it that way than if if it is auctioned.

It looks like it is going to be a stellar piece.

I agree with Keith about the raffle and would like to see that happen.
Regardless, fantastic blade and ivory.
This one looks like it could give Joe's DH3 stag Fire Fighter a run for it's money.

I agree with Keith & Doug on the raffle. It seems having this available at the largest knife show in the world should sell a lot of tickets. But, with the 4 makers involved, Paul's sheath, and the cancer research cause...this will auction well, also.

Looks to be a great fighter coming together!

I agree. It also allows for a LOT more people to participate and to have a chance at the piece. The promotional aspect of generating awareness about the charity as also increased because more people are "in the game". If it's an auction, there are a whole bunch of people that know right away they have zero chance of outbidding daddy deep-pockets, and hence there involvement will also be zero.

Kevin,
At what time of the evening will the CKCA 2009 Annual Meeting/Banquet
take place on Thursday night?

All the best,

Looks great guys! That mini show sounds awesome! Wish I was going to blade so I could come. The benefit knife looks really nice. I know haven't signed up for the group yet but I plan on doing it shortly, anyways I agree with others that a raffle should generate more money and more interest.

Anyways very cool to see what you guys have done in such a short time.

Yes, it is going to be a stellar piece.

I expect we will go with a raffle because of the reasons Roger and yourself presented. The raffle process does increase expense and requires much more labor to administer. Not just from a ticket sales aspect but the degree of accounting and documentation required.

The considerable dollar amount of contributions and ticket sales the Blade Forums Benefit Bowie received through PayPal, kicked-off an audit. I was required to supply them with a written description of charity project, a review of our website, a complete accounting of every cent in and out, % expense to donation, and to produce a letter from the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, certifying the amount of the donation presented to them.

I use to be leery of just how secure PayPal was, but learned through this experience they are on the ball.

Yes Trevor, we are off to a good start considering we have only officially had the doors open for 9 months. We currently have about 125 members in 9 countries, which may not seem a lot to some, however it's allowed us to have controlled growth thus our ability to move fast on projects and get a lot done. I expect we will have between 175 and 200 members our first year which if so, will be great.

Even though we haven't done any advertising, our website has had over 21,000 visits to date.

Seems like some collectors have taken a "wait and see approach" in that most of our early members were non-collectors, however now that trend has reversed as our makers have influenced collectors to come on board.

Looks like the CKCA Calendar project will be a success. Our goal was to get beautiful custom knife photos out in public's view and break even in doing so. Even though we offer these calendars at a very reasonable price, it looks like we will accomplish this goal. I would to thank all who have purchased calendars.

Over the coming years custom knife makers and enthusiast will benefit from the CKCA whether you join or not. But we sure would like to have you as members.

Here's what the new CKCA display looked like all set up at the AKA show in Little Rock this past weekend. It sure generated a lot of positive interest!

The calendar I have up in my store elicits plenty of appreciative comments.

February's mix of knives is really awesome. That calendar has made this month a real pleasure. Provided me with a little inspiration, too...;)

Thanks Lorien. More folks that see um the better.

That show display does look nice. And we will save a bundle in shipping cost as it packs up in it's own carrying case and can be shipped UPS.

BLADE Magazine is doing an article on the CKCA for this year's BLADE Show issue. That will be great exposure since in addition to subscriptions, so many pick up the free copies that are available all around the show.

We have an up to date and complete 2009 Knife Show Schedule (including international shows) with links on the CKCA website.

The Prostrate Cancer Fighter is on it's way to Russ Andrews for the fitting of the ivory and a butt cap.All the makers are working very hard on this project. It's going to be great Fighter.
Also the seven knives being built for CKCA banquet mini-show are also coming along very well. Must be a CKCA member to have a chance at them. But all non-members still have three months to join before the banquet.
Russ Andrews tells me his will be an over the top Bowie. He has no table at blade show, so this will be the only non-order knife he will have for sale for some time.
