CKRT Woes...Partial Review

CRKT just got back to me and said that they don't sell internationally and to check with the distributor...Well Canada doesn't have a CRKT distributor. I have to say I'm pretty disappointed by the news as I liked the look of both those knives, but I don't like them enough to pay full retail lol. There's just too many Benchmade or Spiderco in that price range that interest me 100x more.

I like my Heiho. The lock bar is almost all the way across but it’s rock solid. My favorite sticker style knife by far.

BASP - Why be so shy? Your comments are worthy of stating in a knife forum. You won't hurt anyone's feels I assure you. This is a tough bunch of knife aficionados.

Not shy. I've stated my opinion about crkt's lack of quality steel heat treat in every crkt thread that pops up. I'm just tired of the same old story. My crkt S.P.E.W. was the worst knife I've ever bought. Just done with them ever since.

Basp - I agree with you about the SPEW, ugh! My fixed blade of choice is the Spyderco Moran drop point. That's a great knife! The SPEW looks like it should be on the tip of an arrow. I can see a broken blade tip in every SPEW owners future. But I don't think it is typical of many of CRKT's other folders.

Again , they took a great design by Alan Folts and used 5Cr15MoV with a crappy sheath . It's still OK as a backup SD if you can get the sheath to work .

Well the Spew has 5Cr15MoV at 55-57 HRC and costs $20. You get what you pay for. That's CRKT. You pay very little for a "designer" blade, you get the Spew. You pay bigger bucks, like for the Ken Onion Eros ($125) you get Ti framelock, premium steel, razor sharp blade, flipper deployment and IKBS.

You've got a point ! There is plenty of "in-between " in cost vs quality . But for a decent steel (and HT) and sheath , I'd pay a bit more and would own a lot of CRKT instead of none . ;)

I agree. There's been some that I've passed on due to quality that I would have bought otherwise. The classic example is their take on the Sebenza which never made it to full production. However many people beat CRKT to hell and they keep working, the Kit Carson models for example.

Per the original person, you buy pawn shop knives you can't really blame the manufacturer. I know, I have a lot of 2nd hand knives, customs and production.

I have a fabulous CRKT Hi Jinx, Blade Magazine OVERALL Knife for 2014. Unfortunately there were only a very few made. CRKT sells some great knives, IMHO.

All they did was put their name on it. Did you ever sell that thing?

That is the problem with crkt. They design nothing and make nothing, but they overcharge. Not to mention the qc/ff issues that they never have cared to resolve.

They'll never be an enthusiast brand here.

crkt branded knives are sold at wally’s and their packaging looks pretty cool.

the only one I own is a made in Taiwan m16 tanto that I bought used for $4. This thread is making me think I got ripped off.

The Hissatsu folder is a classic and I love mine. Also have the BHQ exclusive Pilar and that's another good one.
Crossbones is intriguing. I've been tempted.

My only experience with CRKT was a Viele Wasp I bought back in the late 90's/early 2000's. Very nice looking knife with quality materials and a good finish - AUS-118 steel, titanium frame, and blue/black polished G-10 scales. The fatal flaw was that the blade that would release from the linerlock with just a slight tap on the spine. I never bought another CRKT after that.

I hated the Ignitor. The way that the thumbstud had to be manipulated to unlock the blade was annoying as ————.

On the other hand, I keep a drifter around to remind me just how good a $20 knife can be (except for the pocket clip which is garbage—but hey, it’s only $20 bucks!)

I used to recommend CRKT quite often but, not anymore. A few years back, they raised their prices and lowered the quality of their blade steel. Effectively, more money, less knife. I now recommend OKC and Kershaw as my budget brands.

I admit, I still own two CRKT knives. A Kit Carson's M 16-02 Tanto and the Peter Marzitelli Prowler. Both served me well while I was in uniform. Unfortunately, blade steel is only AUS 6 on the Prowler. Even with the poor steel, it is one of my all-time favorites.
