Clarification of the Rules on Links and recommendadions

Storm, I fully agree with your statements about knifemaking - it describes me fully. Make a few knives per year, sell a few, nowhere near enough to recoup costs.

On your comments about photos - I don't think that's a problem since photos can be stored on Imgur, or my favorite imgbb..... Oops, I almost posted a line, so just ad the normal .com at the end. At least I don't remember anything about posting photos because Stacy suggested using a 3rd party photo hosting site - isn't that correct? If not please correct me.

Some forums I used to visit... let me pause for a second because something just sank in, I used to visit a lot of forums, nowadays Bladeforums is the last one I visit regularly, I'm sure I'm not alone.

I was saying, on some forums, there is a karma system, where paying and not paying members could earn, instead of pay, certain perks, I see this as a great way to reward helpful posts, collaboration and participation. And its community fueled, because we can all vote for good posts.

i very recently came here looking to upgrade one on my belt grinders.. i could not find any recommended places to buy from so i gambled on google..
after buying a new motor and KBAC box i had to fight to wire everything up.. one Major trick was to copy the VFD from my other machine !! (yea i did not think of that)
since im just a "Basic" member here of 20 plus years and do not sell here i don't buy the "knifemaker" membership so i can not post pictures, or e mail others..
so when the next guy comes here looking for "Help" he gets nothing because of the "House Rules"

i don't buy the "knifemaker" membership so i can not post pictures
Can you not post photos by using 3rd party photo hosting sites? That's pretty normal for forums so they don't have to provide storage space for photos. I use imgbb as I find it the best for my purpose. Stacy will correct me if I'm wrong about posting photos using 3rd party storage sites.

This is an example of posting a photo from a 3rd party storage site:

Everybody can post photos. Paying members with a sufficient level can do it directly, non-paying and lower-level members can do it through any one of the third-party hosts. Imgur is the best from what I have read.

This is how, direct from Spark:
"Hands down, use imgur.com. Just use imgur.com. USE IMGUR.COM"
So easy. They generate the BBCODE for you - just upload the image, copy the bbcode, paste into your thread, huzzah. Create an account there, you can even organize your images into albums to share. So easy!"

yea i could do that but i don't feel my INPUT is appreciated here so why bother ?? the pictures are on my phone, so id have to upload them from my phone to somewhere to try to "Share"
if the "Boss" here does not value that input into "His House" his rules i will just keep it instead of "Sharing it here".. maybe ill find someone that want's it/needs it someday..
so the question that has already been asked is Who really looses out here ?

I wasn't sure. I have heard of people who make pro level knives but are basically hobbyists and work more than full time jobs getting told that their pictures are advertising and they should have a knife makers membership on some of the other pages. Thats why I understood it to be an issue with posting knives since we are makers. I earn $5 an hour if im lucky on a simple build if I don't add in any sort of overhead. If I add that in it turns into an expensive hobby.

Guys like Larrin Larrin D DevinT and Willie71 Willie71 among so many others, are what makes the shop pages special. There is Bruce Bumps site that is cool as well but it isn't as busy. I'm not saying that it is in anyway wrong to change. Its a private business after all. The site does provide a lot of value. I wanted to makes knives since I was a kid and I would not be producing knives that can beat out any factory made products if I had to learn on my own and from the limited books available. If I needed to I don't have any problems paying for access although I don't know if I would do it unless I needed to learn something. That's what I was worried about since at 5 or so years I'm not the most experienced maker but I'm not new either and if guys with 20 or so years of experience stop coming we loose the whole eco system.

Stacy E. Apelt - Bladesmith Stacy E. Apelt - Bladesmith I didn't mean to give you a hard time. There are all soets of roumers and complaints that always float around here. We tend to be an exact bunch and some guys will split hairs on words and start calling others out. I have heard talk off site about some who have guys giving them a hard time and claim that when they post pictures they are advertising without a membership. It's probably a bigger deal for those who post on other pages where there are more production knives and don't understand that yes the guys is a maker and sells knives for a lot of money but he only sells 5 a year and was happy to only loose $500 when you total things. I just thought it would be nice to be clear and avoid that.

Storm, I think posting photos of knives we make fall into the range of "look what I did", and that's ok. BUT - if the photo is posted as "look what I done and it's for sale", then that's a no-no since it's advertising. Even mentioning it's now "going to a new home" could well be pushing the limits. I would think mentioning "it's a gift to somebody" would be ok, just not anything to do with selling.

Stacy, please correct if I'm wrong and I'll be happy to edit - perhaps even better you go ahead and edit the post (or delete completely) if needed.
