Well I'm deciding on my Christmas gift to me, and after reading several reviews, talking to my good friend in Wyoming, and just general "lusting" for some time I'm trying to make my mind up on a good camping hammock.

Over at British Blades they have several favorable reviews on the Clark Jungle Hammock, and the Hennessey Hammock.

My friend in Wyoming swears by the Clark. You can find info here:

Would like to hear from you guys what you think. Have any of you ever used one before (Clark or any other hammock for that matter)?

Thanks for the help........

I'm partial to the Hennessey. The bottom opening is kinda weird but for summer use it is great. Opens up a whole new world of campsites. Some people may not like the bug netting.

I still don't understand hammocks in the winter. No matter what you'll have massive convective heat loss in a hammock. I prefer to dig a pit for a tent, or make a snow cave. I can't see any benefit to a hammock being used in winter.

I think most brands need their strapping systems modified to suit the user.

I don't own a Clark hammock, but I own several Hennessy hammocks and several "simple" parachute silk hammocks -- i.e. no bug netting.

After four or five years of researching and practicing hammock camping, I think the best manufactured hammock is this one:

But I think you should buy one of each (Clark, HH, Mosquito) and let us know which one you prefer and why.

ON IT........;)

I'm in my confused state now. What that normally means is I'll look forever and not buy a damn thing.

Thanks for posting this. I'd never seen these before. The thing I disliked most about the Hennessey is that the bug netting is perma-fixed to the hammock. Means I can't smoke before bed.

I like the zipper closure. Probably best to get one and then find a good sil tarp to go with it.

ilbruche: Glad to be of service. You and I share the same beef with the HH. I WILL say that for a light, easy to set up, completely integrated hammock, the HH can't be beat. But there is that perma-netting.

With the Mosquito hammock, you pitch it in the day, leave the netting part alone, and just turn it bottom-up for lounging (smoking, etc.).

When you're ready to turn in, you flip it over so the netting is up, rig the netting (I use shock cord and mitten hooks) and you're set for a night of peaceful sleep.

Re bottom insulation... I use a GoLite backpack -- essentially a nylon bag with straps. I cut a six-foot closed cell foam pad into two three-foot lengths, roll those, and use them as the internal frame for the pack. When I get to camp, they go in between the two bottom layers of the hammock for insulation.

It's not a comfy as an underquilt or a bag that goes around the outside of the hammock, but it suits me better than carrying the extra bulk.

I had the idea for a sleeve that you could slip a pad between. Good to see someone already thought of it.
