I've wanted to try my hand at knife making for a while now but can't find any classes or even makers around here. I was wondering if anyone knows of classes or just someone with the equipment willing to teach near Victoria BC.

Thanks

I too am interested in classes and just submitted my information to get class updates from Lyle Brunckhorst.

Another person in Washington State is Master Bladesmith, Bob Kramer. Looking at his website it looks like he offers classes, though there are no dates currently posted. I used to have Bob sharpen cooking knives over a decade ago (before I figured out how to sharpen my own) when I was in the restaurant business. He is a great guy.

I don't know of anyone in the Victoria area.

I don't know Mr. Kramer, but probably because I'm new to the Northwest. I haven't had a chance to meet everyone out here yet that makes knives.

I do know Lyle and he is a class act. I've been to his shop, met a lot of wonderful people and learned quite a lot. I'm not sure if Lyle teaches one on one classes. He does have the above mentioned week long classes that wrap up with his Hammer Ins. He is assisted quite often by Ed Caffrey, another class act. If you learn well in group settings, then this would be a good choice to get you started.

If you don't mind traveling a little bit, Ed Caffrey also teaches in his own shop. He does teach one on one classes. He is in Great Falls, Montana. Ed would be an excellent choice to begin your knifemaking journey!

Basically, do you learn better in groups with lots of questions flying around. Or do you learn better in private, one on one teaching situations.

Whatever choice you make, whether it's Lyle, Ed, or Mr. Kramer, welcome to the world of sharp. I hope you find it enjoyable and rewarding.
