Classic Bowie, Realistic Price?

Back from a longer absence, absolutely astounded at how much content this thread accumulated! Very fine with the historical discussion, that's half the appeal for me. As for my hunt, I did price-check the Loredo and the Trail Master as a budget alternative. Basic steel, just looking for something that closely simulates the feel of the Cold Steel trainer while allowing for cutting tests with specific movements from the manuals. I am not in the market for a kit knife because I don't have a shop or experience, but they do look spectacular for those who do.

I will say I'm shocked that Cold Steel hasn't tried to undercut its top models...The Marauder seems to be that attempt, but the extra flange on the handle is a gimmick I'd have to file off most likely. Has anyone tried the Cold Steel models with input on how they feel swinging and cutting?

Nothing simulates the feel of the Cold Steel trainer better than the knife that it is based on, the Laredo Bowie. Would be nice if you could handle one in person before purchase to make sure you like the way it feels in hand.

I picked up some decent historical bowies from hanwei a few years ago on sale and are pretty nice.might want to look at them used or new...really nice sheaths too. The chevalier with the curved pinned stag handle is a winner.

Looking into the Laredo, I'm running into major durability concerns due to the wire tang. Is this strictly a soft-target knife?

Not saying you couldn't use it for utilitarian purposes, but, in my opinion, yes, the Laredo is pretty much strictly a fighter. Same with the Natchez Bowie, unfortunately. But, then again, I will probably pick up a Natchez, just because. If I was looking for a true utility Bowie, I'd likely go with the Trail Master or something similar, but I have other blades to cover that kind of work. Personally, if I think I might need a smaller knife, I carry a smaller knife. But if I was restricted to one blade, a 7-9" Bowie would probably be it. A big knife can do the smaller jobs better than a small knife can do the big ones.

Not sure if it was mentioned but Puma and other German made knives have used a Bowie like pattern before. Western has also. There may be a new knife maker here willing to make you a carbon steel one within your price range.

If you are practicing classical bowie fighting then you should be aware that many production bowies do not have a sharpened false edge or swedge.
I know that backcutting is a major component of bowie fighting. Also I heard that many people fought with bowie knives with the blade facing up, also relying on the sharpened swedge for a forward hooking attacking.

Have you checked out the Condor undertaker?
Classic look, coffin handle, and about $90 delivered.

It's designed by Joe Flowers, which is a great sign. In my experience with several Condors of his design, they are functional, tough, and a great bargain.

I have a couple Marbles Ideals a 6" and a 7" Stag that are great reproductions of classic bowies. I know I see those fairly regularly at gunshows.
I do remember some years back Bark River offered a coffin handle bowie but I'm not sure if it made it into full production or not. I also have a Bark River Settler which is similiar to a bowie style but again I'm not sure if there were many made mines 1st production run.
I would think you could find a custom maker to give you exactly what you want using the old school carbon steels for a reasonable price also.

What's wrong with your basic KA-BAR USMC MKll?
Even better but in modern handle material is the Ontario SP6 which is a fighting knife.
Then there is my favorite knife of all time which is the Ontario SP10 Marine Raider.
But if you want total cool and quality get a Black Jack #1-7 fighter with stacked leather handle. More than your $100 limit but worth it.

Finally got my CS Trail Master yesterday. Talk about a hunk of steel! Just holding it makes me want to go out and wrestle a grizzly bear or perform some other testosterone-laden demonstration of manliness. :p
