Classic vs. Regular Sebenza

Unless they have changed the CA state penal code recently, AFAIK you aren't limited to a 3" folder.

Maybe some county or city in CA has a blade length limit of 3" or less?

You aren't limited, unless the city you live in has municipal codes that limits the length of the blade (LA, for one, comes to mind), otherwise you can pretty much carry a folder of any length & Sebenzas are certainly not "scary" looking.

As far as preference (Classic vs regular), I personally prefer the classic (I carry a small classic wood inlay). I had a small regular CGG Seb. & traded it for my current Seb (A cobote wood classic). But really, it's whatever fits your hand better.

As far as pros & cons, here's what I've noticed, but it's certainly not really pluses & negatives. The regular has ridges along the cutout for the thumb stud & the handle shape (Top & bottom) is more parrellel to each other. The regular's blade has a little more belly to it, too. The classic doesn't have the ridges, but has a larger cut-out for the thumb-stud (Neither's a problem for my large thumbs, but it is larger on the classic). The classic handle narrows some towards the middle & has more of a "finger guard" just before the blade. In fact, that's probably the primary plus, to me, for the classic.

As everyone else has stated, you really need to try them, because it really is personal preference.

Good luck on whatever you do choose.

I technically live in the juridiction of the City of LA even though I live farther away from Los Angeles than when I live in Redondo Beach which was physically closer to Downtown. :(

I like how the Classic tapers towards the middle on both sides of the handle.

I'm going to check them out in person at Plaza Cutlery just to make sure. And....ahem, try not to buy too many of them. :p

Great! We want a full report from your trip to Plaza Cutlery. :)

I've purchased from them by phone but I've not been there. Nice folks.

Classic, to me, has a better guard area and point of the blade is a little lower
so no brainer, safer is better...
I'd suggest the wood inlay or micarta version, as they adds a little bit more grip.

This potential problem worries me a bit.

Although I have pretty girly hands, not quite meaty man hands.

The theory of regular sebenza blades being mixed up with classic handles seems to be the most plausible explanation.

Let me assure you that the Classic & Regular blade being miss matched is NOT the case.

The blade edge on the Classic in the closed position is VERY close to the opening of the handles, mostly at the pivot and mid section on the blades edge.

Like many here I tend to handle my knives just while watching TV etc. and when the meat part of a finger happens to work its way in between the handles it does in fact come into contact with the edge....I cut myself twice last week alone doing just so.

On a positive note, once you sharpen the blade a few times it should not be a problem as the blade will not set so close to the handles edge while in the closed position.

But to answer the original question... I have both, and even with the above problem, I do prefer the classic to the regular. Feels better in the hand & very easy to access the lock.

Kindest Regards,
Keith
