I'm just getting into collecting, and I like the idea of collecting knives that are sort of representative of a manufacturer. I don't know what word is best: epitomize, personify, quintessential, represent, flagships?

Anyway I've got
Buck 110
Spyderco Delica
SAK Champ
WWII Camillus USMC

I'm not familiar with that many manufacturers. What knives should/could be in my collection?

Benchmade 710 is a pretty standard BM that most everyone seems to love. I know I love mine.

Here's my list:

Schrade USA - Old Timer 34OT
Buck - 110 or 119
Camillus - USMC or electrician's knife
Case - nothing particular, perhaps the Sodbuster
Gerber - Gator
Grohmann - #1 Original
Benchmade - Griptillian 551
Spyderco - Delica or Endura

There are many other brands that I don't feel can be characterized by any single knife model. AG Russell, Case, Bark River, Ek, Hen and Rooster, Canal Street Cutlery, etc., etc.

Emerson CQC7, It wasn't the first but it kinda defined tactical. It was the king of knocked off blades.
John Ek dagger
Gerber Mark I and Mark II
Western W49 bowie
Randall 1-7 (this one will set you back)
Loveless drop point hunter, (Man will this one cost you)
Benchmade Balisong with Weehawk blade.

This is by no means a definitive list but it ought to keep you busy for a while.

I want a SF dagger and a nazi dress dagger crossed on a plaque to signify
the conflict in WW2.
Buck 119 and 110
I know the 119 is not as big a name as the 110 but it is a personal fave and the best fighter for the least money.
Frost Mora the best 10$ you will ever spend
10 years from now the BYRD knives will be the cheap folder against which all others are judged.

I'd get the USMC fighting knife from Ka-Bar. It's a total classic that's been around for a hell of a long time. It's the knife that pretty much put Ka-bar into the spotlight of a mainstream knife company.

The Sebenza by Chris Reeve Knives was the first framelock in the industry -- widely copied by many folder manufacturers and custom makers.

The Leatherman multi-tool was the first plier-based multi-tool, and everyone and their dog AND cat are doing those now . . .

As for Spyderco -- Several candidates. I'd suggest the Police model.

Cold Steel Trail Master
Ka-Bar USMC
Buck 110
Fallkniven F1
Gerber Mark II
Randall Model 1

Thanks for the suggestions, I've got quite a shopping list going. A good thing is the number of under $100 knives (I think that's where my collection is going to live). I'd like to add a Barlow to the collection as well. Who currently makes "real" Barlow knives?

Gerber Mark II
I see they are trading for well over US $800.00 on ebay
I thought I had one for $75 Aus last week and it went for $150 Kicking myself about that.

Strider SnG, Kershaw Boa, BM Nimravus for fixed blade, Swamp Rat Camp Tramp (goood luck!) Ontario RAT -7, Randall #14 Attack.

That should debit your card $1k.

Who currently makes "real" Barlow knives?

Nobody. Cheap Chinese versions. Or you could check on an A.G.Russell Barlow, but these would be more of an expensive tribute to the pattern, not an original, affordable "kid's knife".

Edit: Why am I such a cynic? Go to www.knifeworks.com and www.knifecenter.com and any of a half-dozen other sites, do a search for "barlow" and you will find Case and Boker versions, at least, perfectly good knives, some not too expensive, either.
