As promised. Here is a sorry picture of a before picture of a camp knife that I'm about done with. I dont see a damn thing wrong with how the brass looks with this configuration. It's black canvas micarta for a handle. 1065 brine quenched with clay treatment. I was going to finish it up and post a side by side picture , but the bed is calling me :D been up since 1:30 and daddy needs a short Winters nap. . I'm going to etch the blade and patina the brass after I do the final grind and sharpen.

ohhhhhhhh. Mikey likey.

You go take your little nappy, and leave the knife on that piece of driftwood. ;)

Real tragedy you had to go and ruin a nice piece of work with that funkyass brass, Mark! ;) :) :footinmou

Cool piece! Hamon's way cool! Hope you had a good nap. Looking forward to the patinated version, too!

Mark,

I can't believe you put driftwood and brass in the same photo. Everyone knows that you can't place driftwood next to any copper alloys. Tin, nickel, silver, gold, un-annodized platinum, etc those are all fine. You can even include aluminum with driftwood, if there is glass.

Mike really. What where you thinking? I'm mean I've heard of artistic license, but is nothing sacred?

Steve

PS - cool blade, really like the handle. One fine knife!

God is sacred to me, Steve. Sometimes some of His Creation in Nature.

Anything Man has touched? Nahhhhh... ;)

I like it , I like Brass too, it's a poor mans Gold,, just keep it polished :D
or the right patina on it,, :D nice job Mark..

I know you guys are just kidding :D right :(

right :(

com-on right :(

:D :D

Its going to be a little while. I'm going to have to wait till tomorrow to post the after picture. I managed to slice my paw pretty good. My skin is already rotting off from chromium trioxide, so I'd better not get too many more chemicals in the wound right now. That and I thought I would be slick and not mask of the brass when I etched the blade. :( now i get to clean all the brass residue off the ricasso.

That's what happens when you get in a hurry. I'll take an equally crappy picture in the same poor lighting this time tomorrow.

Epoxy thay slice and get back to work.....
Etching with blood is just so yesterday. You know better.
Just kidding. Take care of that paw.
Nice looking blade.

Larry

Looks good as is, but can't wait to see the finished article. Cool hamon on the blade, lots of activity.

Beautiful work Mark. Do you have a name for it? It really deserves one.

It will go with Tsunami (Tidal Wave) because of that surf crashing Hammon.

If thats too 'run of the mill' I will ask my wife for another word that is similar but not as common.

Love the brass by the way :D

Watch those paws big Dog!

Just one question.... Whats the difference in 1065...1075..1080...1084?
I know thats a loaded question but just currious why someone would say...order 1075 over 1080?

Nice guard! File out the slot?...I dont think you have a mill. Also did you shape the guard before assembling? If yes then did you shape the micarta before gluing up too?

I can already tell that hammon is SaaaWEET!

First Mark, take care of your hand - not having healthy hands would put a bit of a damper on knife making. "Better living through modern chemistry" does not mean destroying your hands!

Now for the important message: Shame on you! Using brass for such a fine blade is awful! And such an otherwise beautiful handle, too. Be safe and send that to me for proper burial right away, before somone with some class sees that and calls you on it. Cripes man, it's a good thing you have concerned friends like me who are willing to watch out for your good reputation. (But you can go ahead and clean up the etching before you send it.) :D

The fella that wanted this knife wanted a beater and wasnt as concerned with edge retention as he was toughness. Seeing as I dont have the setup for making bainite, I just went with a lower carbon steel.

I'm sure Mete can explain the differances between hypo and hypereutectoid steels better than I can.

Basically this was an order for a sharpened prybar :D
