Classy Outdoor Hat

I've been thinking about getting a hat that'll make me look like less of a scrub than my typical boonie or baseball cap. I'm thinking something something classy like a fedora. Any recommendations?

Get a decent light felt hat. They look great (when they are new), are water proof and crushable - although that negates feature #1 over time.

Filson Packer will be my next one... but I've accepted the fact that I am indeed a scrub. LOL

The Filson Tin Cloth hats are very good. I had to abandon them, though, because I required their largest size, and then over considerable time the hat would shrink, making it impossible to wear.

I presently use a Tilley hat, great for sun protection.

If you're looking for "very classy" and don't mind spending the bucks, check www.randhats.com. I have a custom from them that I really like. Looks like an Indiana Jones style. Somewhat similar to their Safari model, but a bit more refined. Mine is beaver felt and I expect it to outlast me.

I'm a bit partial to the Tilley hats myself.

I have a the original T-3 as well as the T-4 and the T-4 is my favorite. Eventually I plan to shell out the $$ for the T-4 in Hemp.

I have a Tilley T-3 that I have had for over 10 years. For the first 5 years I didn't wear it that often but have been been wearing it more and more.

When it gets dirty, I through it in the wash and then stretch out the crown. It still looks as good as new.

REI and Bass Pro both have similar lightweight, waterproof and crushable felt hats right now for $30-40. I guess they're kind of a Fedora style. On some sites they're listed as being green, but they're actually brown.

Thanks Andrew! I remembered that thread but couldn't retrieve it.

Rupestris: I think Akubra might be the answer - well, I'll have to scrounge up the the funds first, but it looks like the kind of thing you only have to buy once.

Orrey: There's certain parts of NYC where wearing a cowboy hat implies certain things you don't mean it to imply...

I've got a very nice Stetson white straw hat that works well unless it is very windy. Haven't worn it in the rain yet, but I'm thinking that won't be terribly good for it. One of these days I'll pick up one of those Filson packer hats, they look pretty nice. I just can't stand the Tilley hats, they look way too nerdy.

I wound up getting a Barmah canvas drover (oilskin) and I love it! It's light, really well-made, and affordable. I got it in a local store for about $35 here. Been wearing it all week. I'll try and get some pics up soon. ;)
