Has anyone from the forum ever actually performed this technique? I was just wondering if I could get some real world experience, advice, and tips that would help with my first shot at this. I'll probably try it this weekend or the next one. I hope the line is visible when the blade is finished.

Let us know how it worked -- type of steel, dimensions, quenching medium and temperature, and what sort of clay you used. I believe Engnath used some sort of alumina refractory cement. You'll find his excellent articles on www.knives.com

I remember that there is a maker here who clay tempers 52100, but I forgot who. Show yourself?

Don't forget to pay your taxes...they eventually become my knives:)

Darrel:
Do you mean to coat the entire blade in the cement and then edge quench in brine? What about a thicker spine coating and less or no coating near the edge to give a differential heat treat?

amacks,

Howard Clark has also tried clay-temper on 52100. That is a Katana, but the hamon resulted is not very attractive... in case you can see it
