Clean a Blue Crab (Dead Critter Content)

In MD i have grown up on craps. When I was little I always ate the lungs (devils fingers) and still do sometimes. I cook mine whole and alive though with lots of old bay after pulled out of the steamer pot. I do like some of the mustard (Orange stuff inside that is basically crab shit). Damn, now I want to go crabbing next weekend.

I'm from MD originally and that's how we cook 'em. Steam them with beer and covered in Old Bay. We don't eat the gills, though.

As for boiling blue crabs: :barf: They get too watery that way.

nice! what do you use to catch the blue crab? we have a bit of them up here in NC as well. awesome read my man.. btw i just ordered the yellow lady bug
Just scooped these up with a net as they came by while we were fishing. They were coming into a little pool along with the tide. Like the other fellas said, chicken parts work well. Just tie them to a string, toss them a few yards out in the water and tie the other end to a stake or something. Wait awhile and then slowly drag it back, they'll follow it. You can also get all sorts of baskets pretty cheap, and you can make one with a little chicken wire. Check your local laws on baskets, probably have to be float marked, etc.

Great walk-through once again! What do you use as bait? I fished a similar spot with mullet, sand fleas, and shrimp and barely got any bites (when we did, I think they were almost all on the sand fleas).

Also, what rod/reel and test line do you use?

We used little pieces of shrimp to catch some pinfish, then used the pinfish as cut bait on the small rods and live bait on the larger rods. We also had some squid. Sand fleas are great bait, Pompano love them! Tides play a big part, as does how the bottom is laid out. One spot we fish you can catch all sorts of fish, but not get anything but pinfish and croakers a hundred yards down the beach. If you're fishing an unfamiliar area, find a "mom and pop" bait shop. Just be honest and tell the guys you don't know what the heck you're doing. These guys usually love to help, and are up on what's running and where. Of course they are going to try to sell you something, but it's usually going to be what you need. You're going to drop more coin than if you went to a Wal-Mart and bought your tackle, but just figure the extra spent is on the advice.
I was using a four foot rod with an open face reel, ten pound test with a foot steel leader. After I caught all the sharks I wanted to, I took the leader off, used a little split shot and #6 hook to catch the whiting. Where were you fishing?

I was fishing in ocracoke, nc. I just bought a new combo I hope to use at cape may next week too!

Awesome! My brother in law and I caught a bunch of these, but didn't know what to do with them. We gave them away to an older guy on the same pier. Next time we wont be so dumb. Thanks!

Whoops I meant steem them with water and vinegar.

To catch them I use a crab trap with a chicken neck in the middle or a string with a chicken neck attached.

I used to crab a lot in Louisianna as a boy. String, a chicken net, and a dip net, and an ice chest full is no problem. Never cleaned them befor boiling though. You just pull that stuff out as you ate.

I'm with you Andy. Guess I was doing it wrong. Oh well, tasted good to me.

Sincerely,
Hillbilly Ghostwolf

This time of the year pics like these make me envious. It's starting to get cold in my neck of the woods.

great pics & info . a rhode island buddy told me to dip sourdough bread into the soft parts & eat it all. i stayed with the shell & claw meat. those innards looked nasty but my buddy slurped them up
