Clean up epoxy during knife creation

couple layers of blue tape put the scales on
trim to size with exacto type of knife, remove scales and extra tape (underneath) and glue /clamp it on
excess glue comes right off the blade with the tape, sometimes you got to cut the glue to get it off with the tape
but is easy to do without any problems.

On stag handles I have rubbed KY Jelly on the stag where I did not want epoxy on.
Actually works well.

OK OK enough of the weird looks I can feel them from here.

I don't remember who gave the tip but fould up coffee filter paper is a good lint free paper to clean up with

Have you ever tried 5 min epoxy? It is strong enough. Do you really think you can tell the practical difference between the measured psi ratings?
5 min epoxy is used on thousands of knives made every year. Howver I don't recommend 5 min epoxy for the occasional user/hobbyist, it's too fast and unless you have experience, you will have a mess on your hands.

Acetone is nasty stuff, you can use denatured alcohol or even 90% alcohol to clean up the epoxy before it's cured.
^^^This^^^ I’ve used Gorilla and Loctite 5min epoxy many times and it seems to work just fine. Nowadays I mostly use West Systems or Pops slow cure epoxy, but the 5 minute stuff still does what I need it to.

My first knives were made with 5 min epoxy. They are also the ones I have used most. No sign of failure yet.

I can only go by my experience as a boat builder for many years. When you glue two pieces of wood together with 5 min. epoxy and then break the wood apart the glue joint fails. When you glue two pieces of wood together with slow cure epoxy and break the wood apart the wood comes apart while the glue joint is unaffected. You do it your way and I'll do it my way.

Question.

With mechanical fasteners holding the scales how many 5 minute glue joints failed?

We do not even need glue to attach scales when good fasteners are used. This is evidence by all the knives with removable scales.

Glue is great to seal from contamination but the strength becomes mute when mechancial fastners are used.

Some high end great knifemakers are using CA glue and fasteners.
