Clean up G10?

You gotta love Craigslist.... Last night I bought a Manix and mini Manix for $60. :D They definitely have been carried, but they look like they've never been used or even sharpened. The blades are absolutely perfect. I'll have to say these two knives are my absolute favorites and the mini will become my EDC while the other will become my weekend outdoors blade.

Anyway, my question is what is the best way to clean up these knives, especially the G10? I'm guessing just soap, water, a fairly stiff brush and a little elbow grease.

How do you all get your users cleaned up and ready for duty?

Great deal. Was that $60 for both?

I just use soap & water with an old tooth brush. That combo works well and it gets the G10 scales looking like new. If you wish, you could also take off the scales for a more thorough cleaning.

If the black G-10 has become a little faded you can use black leather dye (not shoe polish) to make them look new again.

Thanks.

I gave them a bath, and used a toothbrush to brighten up the scales a bit. There is a little paint on the mini's scale, but since these are going to be users and not safe queens, I'm not too worried about it.

I plan on stripping and polishing the pocket clips next.

I just gave them a quick touch up on the sharpmaker's white stones and a good stropping, and wondering where all my arm hairs went. :D

Nice catch! I really like my mini-M. When I get a "pre-owned" knife on trade or sale, I usually bathe them in warm water and a light dish soap, rinse well, dry and blow dry, then wipe all metal parts with Tuff-Glide and lube the pivot, ball, and lock areas. If the G10 or FRN needs anything, I'll wipe it down with WD40. That often brings some shine back to it.

Quick update - thought I'd polish the clip.

I used some 400 grit sandpaper to remove most of the black, and then my dremel tool with a polishing wheel and some Brasso. Nice and shiny.

Dalefuller, thanks for the WD-40 tip. Brought the blackness back out of the G10, although I can't get what looks like latex paint off a few spots. Oh, well, this isn't a safe queen.
