Hi Folks,

Bob here...with another stupid and annoying question!!! This post was sparked by another thread about motors and cooling/overheating.....didn't want to hijack that poor fellows thread.

I have a Grizzly 2" x 72" grinder, like the model below:

http://grizzly.com/images/pics/jpeg288/g/g1015.jpg

There are two vents for cooling on the underside of the motor. They are exposed with no filter to prevent grinding material (Metal, Wood, Antler, Bone, etc...) from getting inside the motor. Is there a way to clean out the accumulated dust from within these ports? Does anyone have a method/procedure that they currently use for this or any other motors?

My grizzly get awful hot and I'm wondering if the dust inside the motor is causing the heat? Is the motor supposed to run hot?

Any Advise is Greatly Appreciated,

Bob

I blow all my motors out with the air compressor every couple of months . After that , clean up the mess .

ONeill,

I don't have an air compressor as of yet.....but that seems like a convincing argument to get one. I appreciate your advise.

Okay, first of all, you need to cover the vents with some filter material, just buy a foam filter and cut some squares off to cover them. Put some silicone around the ports and press the foam on. Now, if you have a lot of crap in there already, just take a shop vac and vacuum them out really well. Taking the bell housings off is a pain but you can do that too if you really want. I've had the filters on mine for almost 2 years and just vacuum them out ever so often, works great!

I discovered a poor man's air compressor recently, and it has become extremely useful when I'm working on many things in my shop (garage.) It is one of those compressed air cans that are used for cleaning computers and electronics. I use it frequently (but I also use it sparingly knowing it's not an unlimited supply,) and I've been surprised at how long a can has lasted me. It might be worth a try if, like me, you don't have the space or money for a real compressor.

Eric , don't get mad at me here please . But a vacuum will never works as well as air . The vacuum will only suck the dust around the area where the air in vents are . Like water and other stuff , it will take the path of least resistance . There are phase slots in the rotor and stator of the motors and a vacuum will never get that clean as well as the space above the windings at the top of the motor . Foam filters are a good idea but they are only 40% efficient . I only know this from 32 yrs. in the HVAC. trade .

I would still suggest buying at cheap small air compressor if nothing else . My open motors have been in use for 8 yrs. now but of course they are not Chinee motors .

I am getting a lot of good ideas here folks....an air compressor is on my wish list.....in the interim, I'll be using some of the suggestions discussed here.

Thanks Again,

Bob

I've heard that blowing compressed air into a motor while it is running gets the most stuff blown out.

Man, that's it! I am not gonna post ever again! Just kidding, Jack. You are absolutely right about compressed air and that is definitely the best avenue!
