Cleaning an old blower motor

I picked up an older blower Monday. It moves a lot of air but gets pretty hot and starts to stink real fast. I blew it out with air and oiled the only spot I could find but it only helped a little. It has 3 wires, red, white, and black. I can get it to run with the red and black wire but not sure what to do with the white wire. Any suggestions?

I think you have a 220 V single phase motor, there should be a name plate on the motor stating voltage and phase. Red- hot lead, black hot lead, and white for neutral, and there should be a ground wire as well. If you are unsure I would find a friend who is an electrician. If you are trying to wire it for 110V that may be the reason it is running hot, and it would probably trip the fuses.

i have one thats probably similar to what you have that is hooked up for my vent system. if i can get to the wiring without too much trouble i will let you know which ones to hook up.

Its not 220, says 115 on the motor. I tried running the white wire both with the red and then with the black and it slowed it down considerably. It runs fine off the black and red wire but its the heat, smell, and smoke that concerns me. It also wouldn't surprise me if a cat didn't baptize it over the years.

its a capacitor run motor, you need to hook a cap to the motor between the red and white wire. the motor is fighting very hard to run without the cap and I'm sup prized that it starts by its self with out the cap. here is a picture drawing of what i mean
