I know I saw this mentioned before, but couldn't find the thread. How do you clean the black film on hot-rolled ats34? Thanks for the help.

I would swear I remember a similar post on this topic and someone mentioned pickling in vinegar overnight. I think it's in the shop talk archives somewhere, but like you said it's probably easier to just knock it off with your grinder!-Guy Thomas

The white vinegar pickling trick is listed in the late Mr. Bob Engnath's (formerly Blades 'n' Stuff) site under "manual."

He mentioned that that was an idea that he had heard, not tried. Blades N Stuff sold a specific belt for removing that scale at the time. If you check one of their old catalogs, I'm sure it mentions the brand name. I've just used worn belts and taken my time.

Vinegar will eat away rust as well. If it's pitted, the pits will still be there.

I once put on OLD micrometer in vineger to get the rust off. It was so rusted that the next mornig the vinegar had eaten it almost in half!!!
