I like the patina that builds on carbon steel blades and wouldn't clean it off. Each stain represents something in the knife's history: a camping or hunting trip, usually. The patina also seems to protect the blades up to a point.
I cold blue my carbon blades. I like the way carbon steel ages, why fight it, I help it along with Caseys cold blue. Looks good and it shines when lightly oiled
