Cleaning my disk grinder?

I have an inexpensive disk grinder. The disk, I believe, is made from aluminum. Anyway it had the crap abrasive that came with the machine on it for a long time (years). Anyway, I bought some new disks tonight, but when I went to remove the old one it separated in the middle. In other words, the abrasive came off in a sheet, but the paper with the psa behind it stuck to the disk plate.

Seems it's really on there. Any ideas on how to remove it? Does this happen to you?

Heat it up with a heat gun, then scrape it off with sharp plastic ice scraper as used on windows. You can clean up any glue residue with lacquer thinner.

It happens sometimes, when left on too long, or used enough that heat builds up and sort of "cooks" the psa.

Get one those razor blade scrapers from the paint or hardware supply and shoot some carburetor cleaner on the disc and let it soak for a minute. Then scrape off the remains. Lastly, use one of those green scratcher pads that people use on their pots and pans to remove the rest. I turn on the disc for the last part with a wet pad (carb. cleaner). If the disc is scarred in any way it can be polished with 4 oooo steel wool. I do it every once in a while when my disc gets bad. If the carb cleaner won't remove the old adhesive then try the product called "Goof off" . These two products have always worked for me on every type of old adhesive.

Grab your wife's nail polish remover to get the adhesive off. The main ingredient is Acetone which will cut the old adhesive.

i heat up the disk before taking it off by grinding on a real hard piece of steel or even hard wood which loosens up the adhesive.

another way is to remove the disk and heat it from behind with a torch but keep it moving and never let it sit so you do not warp the disk. it will not take much heat to loosen it up so try scraping while heating it. if all else fails, try solvents to loosen the glue.

lacquer thinner is the best adhesive remover I have ever used, 15 minutes soak time and Linoleum tile adhesive peels off like butter, it works really well for those annoying sticky tags that retail stores are so fond of too ;0)

Thanks Strig. I have to do the exact same thing when I get home. I have to get another can on acetone anyway so I'll just get lacquer thinner while I'm there.

As an aside, straight acetone works much better than wimpy Wal-Mart stuff to clean up nail polish on a counter spilled by an errant 11 year old girl hopped up on fruit loops and snow days. Ask me how I know......
