Hello everyone I have been lurking on the sidelines for a long time now but today I have a question. I recently purchased some old bayonets that look in fairly good shape but they are covered with some sort of protective gel. Can anyone recomend a solvent to clean them up. I was going to try mineral spirits but I thought I would ask here first. - Thanx - Banjo Bert

Welcome to Bladeforums. It sounds like your Bayonets are covered in Cosmoline. Mineral sprits should work fine. You may want to try some of the firearm sites devoted to old guns. They have ways to clean off Cosmoline.
www.mosin-nagant.net come to mind. I hope this helps.

Get a quart of lacquer thinner and a fairly stiff brush. You'll be amazed at how well this works! Been using it on old military rifles for many years, and have never found anything better.A paint roller tray is a great accessory.(Don't breathe the fumes, and keep away from flame). Good Luck!

Welcome to the forums. We need a few more bayonet collectors.

Try baby oil. Its safe, it protects, and it works.

BTW, what type of bayonets did you get?

Thanks for all of your replys. I picked up 2 bayonets one is Swedish that is all steel with a hollow handle and the other is Yugoslavian with wooden handle slabs. I believe the Yugoslavian one is for a Mauser and I don't know what gun the Swedish one is for. - Banjo Bert

If the swedish is all steel with a protruding knob at the but going in a 45 degree angel it was made primary for a mauserrifle. It is however used in some cases for the carlgustaf m/45.

I know it is almost as long as the machinegun when its folded... It has to be difficult to strike with.

The Swedish tube handled marine bayonet is an old favorite. Despite its high tech appearance it was made around 1896.

General,

It sound like you have a model 1907. Does yours still have the quillon?

If you step back and look at the 1907 it looks like a Japanese Tanto knife. And it should, since it was originally inspired by the Japanese type 30 Arisaka bayonet.

Nope I think mine is from around 1913-14 it does not have the forward curving quilion. That adds a LOT to the value...

However it is marked Wilkenson Sword and is in very good condition. I am very happy with it.
