I have found that Mr. Clean Magic Erasers do an amazing job cleaning sharpmaker stones, especially the fine and ultrafine, anyone else use them?

I will try that, but AG Russell's rust eraser is the best I've used so far. The Magic Eraser does work good at removing the marker scriblings of a 2 year old from interior doors, also.

No, but I'm going to!
Hahaha. This is a red letter day. Just asked me wife if we had any. One left and it's in my bag for work tonight. Is it a sign of a mundane existence in that I'm excited to go to work tonight and try the magic eraser on my Sharpmaker. :D Talk about a cheap date.:)

I am very happy to have discovered this, I went arround and cleaned all my stones and crock sticks, it worked great!

rrg991981,
How do they work. Do you need to be at a sink and use water. Or can they be used at a desk away from plumbing?

I haven't tried those yet. I tried Hoppe's #9...that worked pretty good but left a residue and odor. Now I use Simpple Green on a blue shop towel to rub them down followed every other so often with Comet and water.

I used Comet for the longest time, but at Thom Brogan's reommendation I got the Rust Eraser, and it works extremely well, with no water and no mess. It is the cleanest I've ever got my ceramics. I tried Lansky's version of the same thing (got it for my Dad at a local store), and while it worked good, it wasn't nearly as efficient as the AG Russell rust eraser. The Lansky version left large pieces of itself all over the blade, while only small pices of the rust eraser came off. I attribute this to the more porous surface of the Lansky eraser stick, while the AG Russell stick isn't very porous at all.

There are a whole lot of things that work ... even an ordinary ink eraser does a good job, especially handy during extended sharpening sessions.

If the rods get really loaded, soaking in most anything acidic will work. Vinegar is too mild, but naval jelly, Lime-Away and Scrub Free soap scum remover (my favorite) work very well. Or Comet/Ajax. Or running them through the dishwasher.

I've used SOS pads/running water, white art eraser and crepe blocks (used for unclogging sanding belts/discs for cleaning my Sharpmaker rods with good success.

Run them through the dishwasher. Works well. Just don't lean them against the bosses silverware or you might scratch it and be sleeping on the couch.

rrg991981, you're a genius!

Clogged my Double-Stuff with tape adhesive and Goo Gone (never has naptha disappointed while smelling so refreshing) and my rust eraser would barely touch it. That Mr. Clean eraser made it look almost new in just seconds! Next step; cleaned all of my other ceramics. Bing; bang; done; clean. Third step, removed ucky tape residue from the swedge of my Native folding pocket knife.

If any knifeknut can spend only $1.99 on a frivolous, knife-related purchase this year, get the Mr. Clean magic eraser!

I had never used one of these till I tried it on the Sharpmaker and have also found it quite adept at removing tape residue on blades as well!

Dang, just when I think I have the best thing to clean my ceramics through mail order, I already had it sitting around the house!

Yep. And it often costs about $1000 worth in guided systems and accessories to release you can sharpen by hand, too.

Bar keepers Friend, which can be found in the Ajax isle, is by far the BEST dry chemical cleaner. You scrub it with a little water and a 3M pad and I dare you to find the dirt! Works perfect!

I used Ajax without much success and I posted here and was re-introduced to Bar Keepers Friend. My late grandma swore by it and I can't believe I had forgotten about it. As she would say..."damn kids, more money than brains!"
