Cleaning Sharpmaker stones

Well, I tried the magic eraser but I cleaned the rods my usual way first. Wanted to see if Mr. Clean could dig a little deeper. Nothing. After cleaning with a liquid hand soap with pumice and a scotch brite finishing pad, the eraser comes up clean as new after scrubbing with it. I'll have to try it solo next time. It is a nice self contained solution if it gets em just as clean as my usual method,

I use Barkeepers Friend and a stiff Scotch pad. Work into a good paste and use warm water. Gets em nice and clean.

I got a really cheap Spyderco fine bench stone. It was cheap because some metal had been worked into the pores of the stone itself. The Mr. Clean does nothing. The Ajax and Scotchbrite has done some, but left some imbedded particles.

What is the next step? I have a belt sander and a disk sander, but would like to try something less extreme....

The next step is to use Barkeeper's Friend or Bon Ami. Oxalic acid will help make the bad steel go away.
