As I am always looking for ways to make an extra buck out of my store front, I have decided to offer my services to passers by. The service I would offer is to sharpen by hand their pocket or kitchen knives. No problem with the sharpening, I use Japanese whet stones to 8000 grit and the knives come out very sharp. The question is how to clean the assorted crap off the blade that piles up on it from every day use. Any suggestions out there for a good general purpose solvent? How about $5.00 per inch for the pocket knives as a price. Kitchen knives????? Thanks

$5.00 per inch seems way too expensive for my customers anyway. I only charge $1.00 per blade. It only takes one minute on the belt and cardboard wheel. I know the Japanese methods costs more though.

I use DMT diamond stones and charge $10.00 per blade, I was doing a bulk discount for restaurants that had decent quantities when I was doing it as a service for restaurants. Serrated was extra. I would shy away from just cleaning gunk off except as a seperate service with a disclaimer in case the solvent damages their handle/spacer materials.

Just my 2cents,

Sharpening is effortless with a Bader/KMG style machine, 120,220,400, leather strop/buff and you got a great very sharp edge. I'd charge probably like $2 or $3 per blade, with a slightly lower price more people will come to you, but i can understand sharpening with stones for it to cost a bit more.

Thanks for the info. My Shop is by the court system in Palm Beach County Fl. so there are lots of people with to much money, you know lawyers and such. So I think I will try for the $5.00 per inch and see what happens.

Sentry Solutions Tuff Cloth is what I use on most of my knives to get off old packing tape residue and gunky build up. Mineral oil, denatured alcohol, acetone, and WD-40 will usually take care of most of that stuff as well. -Matt-

kenhills,
I'm located just north of you, 30th street in Old Northwood, and I charge one pint of Smithwicks for 2 blades. I'm going to be at O'Sheas anyway so it's a good deal for me.
You can reach me at theatre_weapons@bellsouth.net if you want.

goof off from home depot works well. have used it to remove everything from tape gunk to marker and crayon off painted walls (be careful on painted surfaces, too much pressure will remove paint texture)
