Cleaning up a big mess

Sounds worse then Cosmoline. I still don't get why you would clean something that works fine unless the crud is falling on the leather, but I admire your dedication to restoration.

it is working fine but it could run smoother allot smoother, and I'm worried about the dust and grit wearing out the parts. parts for these things have not been made for a very long time so if something wears out then that means i have to make it and honestly i would rather have a clean machine. some gunk on the surface is not what bothers me. but what does is all the stuff in the moving parts i can just imagine all that grit grinding away the metal.

if you have an airbrush, fill a bottle with lacquer thiner. With about 40psi you"ll get the gunk off.

Acetone and transmission fluid at a fifty fifty mix is a most excellent penetrate.

As with any acetone based mix, it eats rubber and plastic.

well its back togather. man this is actualy really fun. I will post the befor pics first so you can actualy see what i'm talking about, it's like i dug it out of a tar pit. but its coming togather.

Can't wait to see the after pics! That thing is a beast!

*edited because you posted pics as I saw the "before post" and wrote my post*

Sucker looks great! What did you do, throw it in the solvent tank at work?

well guys it's done. yay and the crowd goes wiled while all the hot girls flock and throw there bra's. well maybe not but hay i can dream cant i. man it has been a long and dirty road. but i can honestly say i know this thing inside and out. now i just need to play with the tension and tweak some adjustments and I'm good to go. i ran some number 7 thread through it tonight and it didn't miss a beat. man #7 is huge but i thing its about the right size for what i want, a nice bold stitch. i will post pictures of it tomorrow.

JT, I commend you most folks would have just used the machine as it was, for as long as it would have run!

This brings a story to mind of a man in my home town who was said to be a "good mechanic" but when he tore something apart to work on it, he never cleaned up the parts. Now where the mating surfaces were, he cleaned but, never any of the exterior grime. He had lots of repeat customers. I often wondered if it was because he was so good or if it was because of the exterior grime getting into the interior during reassembly, since some of the repeat business was the same vehicles!
Now lets see some pics of the beast and what she can do, see if she cleans up well, so to speak!!!!!!!! :D
