I'm putting on new scales on a fixed blade of mine. I got epoxy on the blade. I took my dremel to it but stopped, afraid I will scratch up the blade. What is the best way to get the epoxy off and polish that area of the blade?

Do you have any pictures? If its not totally cured some acetone might help soften it up.

I've had good results scraping extra cured epoxy off with a thin piece of brass as well. Since the brass is softer than steel it won't cause scratches.

Good move not using the dremel.

Use a cloth with acetone to soften the expoxy. I use popsicle stick to make a sharp edge and scrape with it. Soak then scrape until all gone, repeat as necessary.

I didn't realize the acetone would work after the epoxy was fully cured. Good to know.

Thanks. I'll try the acetone

Another question, can a blade that is scruffed/scratched up be polished or buffed back to looking good?

Take a 6" piece of 3/16" brass rod heat and hammer a flat end and grind sharp. Use this as a chisel to remove dried epoxy. Only problem with acetone is getting it too close to the scales. It might attack the "good" epoxy. Brass wont scratch the steel

The only time I've done this is when a friend had a factory knife that needed a new handle and it didn't have any guard or bolsters. Working up next to the guard or bolsters sounds next to impossible, to me at least. Without a guard, bolsters or handle it's like finishing any new blade.

Refinishing just one spot and matching someone else's finish ain't easy either.
