I'm really starting to like cleavers, I put up a thread a while back on a cleaver I bought (the one in the sheath in the pic). Since then, I was thinking that a cleaver, by virtue of its thickness and temper, should have some great attributes in the wild. I just got this old Foster Bros. cleaver in the pic. The blade edge is beat-up, but sharp. I immediately took it outside and chopped up some hardwood kindling. It did well! More pics soon....

I bought a cleaver after reading your first thread. An Old Hickory. I like it. Need to get a sheath for it.

Yep, I have the same problem... A million knives without sheaths. I am waiting to see which I like the best, and then I'll hunt down Ilbruche or my saddlemaker pal....

ive been thinking about picking up an old hickory. the blade width seems like it would allow for alot of choking up snd such.

Any of you guys have a pic of an Old Hickory, I have been looking mostly at the German models...

Doc - You are right... Brian told me that a one of my posts was on the edge for WS&S, so I am trying to be good...;)

Well having the right motivation in a survival situation is important, there's a wagon load of motivation right there :p

Gotta get home before my friends find out I'm not there to beat them off with a stick..........

After converting a cleaver to a knock-off Koster Nessie I posted it on another forum. Turns out one of the members is also a member here, AlaskaNativeSon. he liked it so much he is sending me this one to work over.

looking at his pic, its a thick SOB. This one might test my metal (pun intended). ;)
I'll keep everyone posted on its progress when it gets here.

I found this odd one in a thrift store a while back. It has a tenderizer on the top edge and a thick convex blade. I'm thinking about grinding the top edge flat and a chisel point. I think it would make a good baton/splitting tool.

Hawkings - Yep, motivation is good, I'd crawl a long way to get back to my Maxpedition Remora;).

Rocky - How you been Bro?

Rupestris/DaleW - That was part of my attraction to cleavers, their thickness lends them to modification. Please post pics of those projects.....

wow that cleaver has been loved! i guess about half the blade has been sharpened off!

cleavers are cool, i never got the chance to take mine out back...i will at some point.

Rupestris that looks like it'll make a great big blade, looking forward to seeing it when your done.
