So, I have pretty limited bush experience compared to many hear. What are some thoughts on the Cleaver style choppers in the 8-10 inch range? Specifically curious to Uncle Ethan's thoughts. I know Jeff Crowner builds a cleaver style chopper.

Always liked the way they looked, but aside from fondling a few I have no real experience with one.

Well... They usually chop really well. It really depends on geometry, like blade height, for its ability to do anything else worth a crap. BHK makes a nice one. LT Wright makes some for competition. As well as Fiddleback Forge. Truthfully, for bushcraft use, you really need some kind of a point. But... Still, they are a lot of fun.

It sounds like the TM Hunt M-18 might be right up your alley.

Here's a thread dedicated to them on Todd's subforum: The M-18 (official)

If that is too long, then his M-9 might suit your fancy.

My father used to use an old chinese cleaver in the yard.
I was always impressed seeing him chop trees and branches with a kitchen utensil.
Seemed to work well.
Now I want to bring a 9 into the kitchen.
Happy fathers day.

Dex (Coyle Outdoors) can mod you a BK9...hellova great chopper. I don't miss the extra weight of the steel removed. It chops just as good as the full 9. The sweet spot is pretty much everywhere. The jimping and the choil makes it very versatile...

Dern straight, Slice. Those are slick.

Or just call fellow Beckerhead Dexwithers (Coyle Outdoors) to cook one of the modified BK9's up for you!

I know its a zombie knife but this thing is a beast of a chopper and its still that good kabar 1095crovan. Its amazing for the price. runs around $65-$75

that little hook on the end really helps for a hand back chopping grip.

golok = good stuff.
so is the parangatang Dex cut down
Oh yeah, forgot about the parang, it is sweet. Also there's a 7, 15, and I think 16 floating around that he did too. Great stuff man. I grabbed this at the gathering and fell in love. It was an early bday gift from my wife. My bday was Friday lol so I've had lots of time with it. People love to plant Holly bushes in front of electrical services so this has been within reach since the day I brought it home. Much less menacing appearance than the 9 when your walking around the side of a house or building in public haha. Everyone should own one!

Todd (Hunt) or Murph(nuge) did a really nice Zomstro mod.

I like your 9, NCSlice....but I'll keep mine whole, if you get my point....ahahahaha! Seriously, tho - a point doesn't really take anything away vis-a-vis chopping capability, but does add some functionality, IMO. Of course, I realize that all those Blade Sport comp knives have no points, per se....but when I'm in the woods I am not looking to compete.

For a second there thought it was photoshoped LOL
It looks like a louisiana alligator hunters version of a Tom Brown Tracker, (extra points for the Cajun accent)

Shades of "Southern Comfort" (shudder)

Anywhoo, if you want bushcrafter, you should think small utility knife (like a 15 or 16, or get a Mora)
And an axe, a cleaver like chopper is going to be limited to chopping, and chances are an axe would do better,

Part of me says "NooooOOOooo, what did you doooo too that nine"
The other part of me that tries to ignore the knives previous carnation says "Nice, I like it, it's in the seven range"

NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!1111!!!!!!!

(ya know, it just occurred to me, when does modding a knife cross the line in too using an off the shelf knife as a blank? There has got to be a cheaper way to do it)

The M-18 hits about as hard as a small axe. I dont mean a hatchet either, I mean a small axe. That knife hits WAY above its weight.
