Anybody see cliff stamps last video about steeper edge angles leading to greater edge retention on hemp rope? I really like his videos he does an excellent job. I wish I had his knowledge. I just don't understand how he gets these low angles on a wicked edge. I scrolled through the comments and found where he posted that he clamps the knife handle not the blade. Genious, I thought. But wouldn't that lead to a crazy arc on the bevel the length of the blade?
I want to try his techniques but thought, why not post here. I am surprised I haven't seen any postings yet.
Also has anyone tried the low angle adapter?
 
You posted this in trade knives and tools. I don't think you will get many pro Cliff Stamp replies around here.

Cliff is an alright guy IMO, i am a member of his forum and he knows a lot about cutlery, the problem is hes kind of hard to understand. Meaning he turns knife discussions into physics and graphs and what not.

I just watched the video and found it interesting. Cliff is actually saying the opposite of what you state above. He says his experiments indicate that a smaller microbevel angle, which is a shallower angle, yield MORE edge retention. He's talking about the microbevel, which by definition means that his secondary bevel is actually even smaller. So the blades he tested had primary angles of 13 dps or lower with microbevels of 13 to 25 dps applied to them.

I'm actually encouraged to try some reprofiling of a blade or two after watching this video and another he did. I think I'll start with something like 12 dps and see what it does to the edge retention for one of my carry blades.

No that's what I meant. A steeper angle, in my head, means very acute. But I'd love to see what you come up with. He also stated that the micro bevel is very important to the longevity of the edge. So the primary bevel would have to be quite a bit steeper or more acute. That is a lot of metal removal, even of it is only from the shoulder.
 
Here they are these are pretty low angles from cynic. He posted about a year ago on mirror edges. These are beautiful. Not sure the angles though.




 
I agree with the first part. For the later, he used easy to understand (simple) statistics and chart to deduced 2.5 degrees micro-bevel separating edge retention between vg10 and s30v, for very specific case of cutting 1/2" hemp rope. Stated about apex and behind thicknesses + hemp rope type + perhaps cutting style + other variables and testing parameters are not useful as having some comprehensive (and my favorite hand-waving) physics to explain 'what; why and how', especially how one could reasonable extrapolate to different setups. e.g. instead of 1/2" hemp rope, what if 1/2" dia rod of ruber/pine/oak/lead/aluminum/etc..

It would be nice/useful to have some sort of edge retention function where you can plug in steel attributes, geometry, fracturing operations, force vectors/angles => voila spit out a cutting bevel & edge refinement/grit or recommend a # range for missing parameter. Right, ideally we want is a 75+% of good solution/#. LOL - I like to tackle this fun project. LOL too bad, if not for life's monkey wrench, perhaps other might already done so (or maybe already did but I don't about :))

I used to enjoy his posts, but it's getting harder to understand his recent posts over Spyderco forum.

Maybe BCMW hand waving can help extrapolating? ;)
 
Not polite for me to P in Cliff's yard ;). When time permits I can always create a new thread pointing toward more comprehensive (formal & hand waving physics) as foundation for the project mention above.
