Cliffs S H B M oh the humanity

Cliff,

Have you had a chance to try the Fusion Battle Mistress? The 'magnum' scale version is very comfortable (at least for my little mitts) and the balance is enhanced by the 10" blade and the forward cant (or rake - I need to learn the nomenclature!) so it's not one of those neutral or handle-balanced thingies. Doesn't balance as forward as a 20" Ganga Ram Special, but doesn't cause hip displasia, either.

looks like all the pics in this thread dissapeared so I decied to post them again:
here it is when new:

And based on how the Basic7 looks after two years, when it broke, not sure how the SHBM is still alive but it is.

Reading about that one got me interested in Busse knives...
Still have not got to handlle a SHBM in person.

wait, weren't you at blade east? I brought a 1 of 300 to blade east for people to handle. Skunk horded it andwould not let anyone else handle it.

From the above picture it looks like the Basic 7 has been reprofiled/sharpened many times to the point of a 1/8 to 3/16th inch loss of material. This alone could have sufficiently weakened the blade to allow it to fracture during heavy use...or was is just gross abuse?

both I think:eek:

I have not been to a Blade yet, but there is a rumour that ResinGuy scored one?!
That's in my neigborhood! I bet he chops with it too:D:D:D

steelnut,
If you ever find yourself in southern Arizona, come on by. You are always welcome to take mine out for a spin if you like. :)

Actually, that standing offer goes for pretty much anyone here.

It's simple. He reground the Basic to make it thinner. You just can't kill a MISTRESS!!!! :D
IMO.... I can't tell, but the pics of the mistress don't look that bad, could it just be the distance and the resolution?

Thanks for bringing this one back to the top Cobalt. :)

Does this mean you have a new (or soon to be) addition to your SHBM family???

If he did then I'd be throuroughly impressed and awed actually :D that's a sweet knife Cliff has....it's actually a 1/300 just without the swedge. It was satin from the factory and was intended to be a test model (thus the lack of a swedge).

I tried to get this one from Cliff....he basically said he wouldn't sell as he didn't need the money (I gave some HEALTHY offers) and wouldn't trade for anything that wasn't way out of the norm and rare....basically something harder to find and just as practical as the SHBM he has....his reasoning being he'd never be able to replace it. I think it's probably at it's permanent home.

It's fared pretty well, Cliff told me it really only had around a .5-1.0 millimeter's worth or wear on the edge.

Thanks for the pics and bringing it back up Dennis! :)

Foo, no I don't have any additional SHBM's. I just noticed my pics had dissapeared so I thought I would readd them.

Bubsy, I don't think that blade is a 1 of 300 without the swedge. I remember when Cliff scored it and it was well after the 300 run. I got my first one at about the same time. If you look at the plunge line area it is smaller and every 1 of 300 has a wider flat area than his, so that makes it a std IMO. Don't know if Cliff had it Rc'd or not, but he's never posted that or mentioned it to me or anyone else. That would be a huge difference. I am 99.99% sure that it is a std. Also, Jerry knew that it was going to be beaten hard, so he would not have given Cliff an Rc62 blade. Rc60, yes.

That's a good point on Jerry's judgement of Cliff's use VS. The hardness.....the only reason why I took it for fact was because cliff was so adamant that it was a test knife....I guess I should have known better (to take everything Cliff Says with a grain of salt :p).

Do you think there's that much of a difference with the Rc62 1/300's and the Std. SHBM's in toughness? I doubt I'll ever use my knives hard enough to find out, but it is interesting.

who really knows. It may have been substantial for infi but still tougher than 90% of anything else out there. I have never heard anyone complain about a 300 being to brittle. But after Jerry had some guy contact him wantng a replacement SHBM because he broke his, and Jerry asked for the knife. When he got the nife, it was indistiguishable from a railroad spike and you could not tell it was a knife. Apparently the guy got drunk and decided that he would use his SHBM and a sledge hammer to break up his concrete driveway into removeable chunks. He did at the expense of an SHBM. If it wasn't for people like that the Rc may have stayed at 62 who knows. But it really does not matter what Rc it was since nothing could have survived that abuse.

Cliffs knife may be a test knife, but that does not mean it has an Rc of 62. It may have been one like rons knife, however, it would have been lower Rc just like rons test blade that Rc'd out to 59.6 to 60. Where the fancy blade had an unusual Rc of 65.

Thanks for the info! I didn't know that about the whole sledgehammer bit :p what an idiot. Even knowing everything about Jerry and the kinda standup guy he is, I'm surprised he replaced it!!! I'd kill for a Rc65 SHBM that thing would STOMP the current Busse rope record...but if there wasn't enough rope for that one, can you imagine what the Rc 65 would do? :D I think Jerry would pass out before that thing would stop shaving!

he won't pass out as long as there is a continuous supply of scotch, cigars, and rope.

edited to add that the idiot was not me.

I think you probably called it at that :)....

I can't picture you taking your SHBM to the pavement :grumpy: makes me sick just thinking of it....THOUGH, because of you I have a recurring nightmare of me riding a speedboat with the wind in my hair and some JD in my stomach thoughoughly enjoying myself when all of a sudden...my belt feels too light and I wake up in a cold sweat.
