Climber tells of knife used to amputate

I feel even sorrier about him going through life with no brain, or at least one that doesn't work properly.
He says he's gonna continue doing the same thing.
Maybe he will get in the same situation again someday and have to cut the other one off.
Serves him right if he doesn't practise good outdoor skills.:p

In the poor guy's defense, sh@#t happens! If everyone planned perfectly, maybe there would be no accidents. But there are. Everyday.
Our local newspaper just reported about the poor soul who was tossed out of his car and killed. Wasn't wearing a seat belt. People fall down stairs, slip on ice, fall off ladders, ad nauseum.

I'll bet he's done this type of thing before (hiking alone with no backup plans). His number just came up this time. Bad karma??

My buddies and I ride our motorcycles with no helmet. Lots of folks think we're crazy. Maybe so. But it is OUR CHOICE. That's what freedom is all about to me.

Semper fi, with as hard a head as yours, do you really need a-

nevermind. Your point is well taken. It reminds me of the line in the Unforgiven- the Kid looks at Muny after killing the cowboy in the outhouse and says; "Well, I guess he had it coming."

"We all have it coming, Kid."

Stangely, I seem to remember a story that Little Bill is telling the reporter about where a guy lost his hand (before he was shot) because he screwed up and did the wrong thing...

See? This movie can speak to many viewpoints. :D :D
:D

Semp I agree. Ifen I had an Indian or a Harley I probably wouldn't wear a helmet either.
I used to do a lot of foolish things myself and have the scars to show it.
There's many a time I needed to be completely alone for a day or two before I killed someone so I can understand the kids reasoning for hiking alone.
But whenever I went to the woods alone someone knew where I was going and about when I would be back.
That's just common sense, but then common sense is the least common of all the senses.

"...I needed to be completely alone for a day or two before I killed someone.."

Yvsa,
Just clarifying here...were the one or two days alone for preventing these killings, or preparing for them? :)

I know, for instance, that I need to stretch before I run...

Preventing them.:) Back then I was always ready it seemed. ;)
Nowadays I have my Flute and the Sweatlodge that I didn't have back then to settle me down, but then I don't get like that nearly as often as I did when I was younger.
In spite of my health the Gods have been very good to me and I am very grateful.:)
Barb has worked some kinda magic on me as well and has sorta tamed this wild ndn, up to a point that is.;)
Some days I'm still in my twenties in my mind and invincible.
Then again it may just be the age. The Old Ones who were older usually talked peace in their day while the young hot bloods were clamoring for war.

Why was he chipping at an 800lbs boulder w/ a pocketknife? What could he have, reasonably, hoped to accomplish?

I think reason was probably an early casualty. Depending on how the rock was situated, shaped (was this a smooth, broad surface or a sharp jutting of stone), and what it was composed of, there may have been some hope.
For instance, a smooth, granite bolder on an incline towards you would probably not even be worth trying. But something out of sandstone, with ridges/notches you could chip at, and situated so that it would not keep sliding towards you as you removed material would be worth a shot. These are two extremes, of course.

And, with everything I've said about his lack of intelligence, I admit that I'd probably wear down every knife/tool I had before I could bring myself to take my arm off. And, once I reached that decision, I would have been down to my teeth--so all of my superior cutting tools wouldn't have meant squat. :(

I think I'm going to take my arms out tomorrow and buy them both a beer.

I think there's a lot that we're not hearing. There were a lot of missing parts of the news conference, and no questions were permitted.

I give him credit for having the guts to cut. That's about it.

Even if you don't want large blades, at least have a REAL leatherman, for pete's sake. I have a cheap imitation that I got for free buying a razor. I keep it at work to take my computer apart on occasion, even then it folds up unexpectedly...

I think this guy saying he'll do it again, etc., is just him saving face, a natural tendency. He sure is the media darling here in Denver. At first they reported he was trapped when a rock fell on him, but later reports indicated that he actually rolled the rock as he was maneuvering over it. Some doc interviewed also stated that between the crush of the boulder and the tourniquet (sp?), he wouldn't have too much feeling. I don't know about that one, but 5 days without blood flow, who knows?

Personally, I don't think too much of his "skills". No planning. I guarantee you, if I had the courage, I have the knife to do the trick in one stroke... It's called an AK, and yes, it's my hiking buddy...

Yvsa, your posts read like a good novel from the old days! Keep them coming!

Thanks for that, Bro.

Maybe it'll stop some young'un of 20 or 30 or 40, and he'll head for the hills first rather than to the OK Corral
