Climbing Knife / Folder with lock in closed position

!!!!!!!Thanks everybody!!!!!!!!

I did some more reading and got a few good deals so here is what is in the email to me.

Leek
BM Barrage
BM Volli
Buck Flashpoint

I had to strike fast on the Barrage and only later discovered the Volli. Lets see. From what I read I will like the Barrage's thicker blade but also the Volli's more profiled handle.

The Buck Flashpoint had one rainforest review where the lock broke, so I will pay some attention to that.

Leek (composite blade), had to get it. At the price I found it it would have been a crime not to. It doesn't look like it has a real lock but having to press the back before using the thumb stud might just be sufficient.

So much in theory.
Will write a proper review about the 4 when I receive them and then add some more thoughts over time. Will link the review in here, of course!

Thanks again.

wow! what a constructive answer

If I'm not mistaken, HAK burned a lot of buyers. So caveat emptor if you are going to deal with them. Might be better off getting it secondhand.

OP - if you get a decently made folder or fixed blade, most of those issues you cited should not be a problem.

Thanks Apec for the advice, I have heard about it too but don't know how they are right now

From what I read you had an Adamas open in your pocket. It's a great knife (I love mine) but it isn't known for having a strong detent. You can look for folders with locks that put some pressure on the blade when closed (lockbacks, Tri-Ads) or something with a strong detent.

I understand your fears with fixed blades, but I think there's an easy way around it. I always carry a fixed blade on horseback, but since I ride on rough terrain (mountains) and train new horses as well, I've had a few traumatic encounters with the ground. I'd heard a few stories about riders injuring themselves with their knives, so I had a custom maker make me a nice sheepfoot knife (no point to punch through the sheath) and as an extra precaution I added an aluminium sheet to the back and tip of the sheath. Kind of what they did with the old pilot survival knives.

So in your case I'd recommend something like a Spyderco Enuff (H1 version is a serrated sheepfoot, should do great on rope) or Bark River TUSK. Get a nice reinforced kydex sheath and you should be good to go.

Cold Steel Pocket Bushman. Strong as hell, and will NEVER EVER open inadvertently. Costs next to nothing so you can afford to lose one every week. :D

Looks like the Buck Redpoint and the DPX Hit Cutter would fit the bill.

The Hit Cutter even looks like a climbing tool, very skeletonized.
