Hey all,
Here's a new finish I've been playing with thanks to the help of Raymond Richards and Wayne Goddard. It's a mustard-patina finish which gives the blade the look of having been your granddad's plus a little extra protection. I'll most definitely be doing more of these finishes in the future.

Clip Point Hunter w/ my first sheath
This Clip Point Hunter has a 4 1/8" blade of 5160 high carbon steel with a mustard-patina finish. The contoured guard is "wagon wheel" wrought iron. The handle is Maple Burl wood with a throat of black Buffalo horn (both are stabilized) and finished off with a stainless steel pin. The knife has an overall length of 8 3/8" and comes with a fully tooled leather pouch sheath.
Price, with leather sheath: $325.00, plus shipping.

Visa, MasterCard & Paypal are all fine and your satisfaction is always guaranteed.

I have waiting to find one of yours that I could nab. I will take it! E-Mail to be sent in a couple of minutes. Steven

J, looks good.....like the style....this ones a keeper......and whats this about your first sheath........wheres my leather gal, on vacation????

Was it cheaper because of the 2nd rate sheath?:-)

On a more serious note does the applied mixture give it a "parkerizing" type protection?

Nice score Steven.. Okay, J. we all love your knives but what's up on the sheath? Should we now expect a blade crafted by Tess? :D

Should we now expect a blade crafted by Tess?

I wish!!! No Tess has got alot on her plate as of late and I offered to help her out. Since she spends much of her time up at the house sometimes packing Danny up and running the 100 yards between the house and the leather shop for various sheath steps is a pain in the butt. I thought it would be good for me to make a few sheaths myself to get all the steps down. I just learn better that way so you'll see a few by me in the near future (under Tess' strict supervision. Don't worry, I'll when you when they're mine.
Sale pending.

So J, what your saying is you are Multi-Taskin......from a business standpoint you are cross training..........what a concept.........I want to see Tess's first Damascus:p

Hi to the family for me.....and when u guys comin to Virginia????

Wow John, you make it sound like we're running a business or something.

I think the closest I'll be getting to VA will be the Winston-Salem Hammer-In. When you gonna start doing the Timonium, MA show or is that one too far from where you moved to?

Hi J, I still live in Newport News.......after all the building on the house , I built out my office......man constuction is one headache ill never forget....anyway my shop was down for almost 9 months....I didnt do the Guild show either this year. im back to making knives, doing the Hampton Gun & Knife show in November, might be able to do the Timonium show this year....cant tell.....going to make that decision after i complete the knives have on the bench now......how bout chu???

Busy, busy, busy John. You know me...that fuzzy chcken is energy food. :D

I'll be at Timonium this year and the Ohio Classic show in Oct., too. I hope we get to catch up and one of them.

Knife arrived yesterday. This is beautiful knife! The sheath looks great, I guess I will have to buy another to compare your sheath to one of tess's. Thanks for a great knife! Steven

Hi Chris,
I used yellow mustard and dabbed it onto the blade with my finger then used a Q-tip and spread cold bluing liquid around the mustard spots. After it dried, I wiped it off and repeated it putting the mustard dabs in different spots than the last time. This blade took about 4-5 applications.
J.

How far down do you take the finish before you put on the mustard , onions and relish? lol Seriously......does it cut down on the shine? I'm looking for a finish to use on combat knives without having to go with some bake on. I will be rust blueing or tool blacking the mild steel to try to get a dark matte finish, but my past experience is that bluing is a bit tougher on hardened high carbon. What effect do you get if you just mustard up the entire blade and don't use the cold blue solution?

If you want to just darken the blade you can use straight mustard or ferric chloride but, these don't hold up as well in my experience. The Mustard finish with the cold blue and/or ferric like this one or a mustard-cold blue paste mix will holdup longer and resist scratches better. I've never been much for tool black or those other coatings, maybe I'm doing something wrong but I really like these patina-ed-mustard finishes. They look good and hold up very well for me.
