Clip removal - Wegner C49

I just got a Wegner Jr and decided to try it clipless, but the small phillips screws on the SS clip won't budge for me using a decent Craftsman screwdriver.

I could see a light stain around where the clip attaches and wondered if there's maybe some locking adhesive on it.

Anyone know if Spydies regularly come this way? Or any suggestions on stuff to loosen the screws without screwing up the G10? Thanks.

Well, I don't know for sure about the Junior but my full size didn't have any locking compound. They were tight but they did unscrew under moderate pressure. They screw straight into steel so they can be quite tight without stripping.

As an owner of the full size, I've been trying to justify the purchase of a junior now that Spyderco is discontinuing them. How do you like it (especially the size) so far?

Gregg: C49's a great little knife. I've been looking for a knife in this size for a while and this was suggested in one of the general threads (looking for sub-3" knife under $100).

Really a solid knife with silky smooth action... I'd imagine you already know that from using its big brother. It'll probably compete with my BM 705S and Boker Klotzli for carry time... all are in that size... 705 is a bit bulkier and Boker is a lot slimmer.

C49 is a nice combination of good blade steel, ergonomic shape, etc, etc... plus, unlike the Boker, the spacer helps to keep my loose change from jamming the blade (I don't want to clip it).

Makes a good smallish knife for everyday pocket carry, and the G10 means you don't worry about scratches on the finish.

Now if I could only take off that **** clip

Hi Longden,
Stay after it bud ! That clip HAS to come off for the knife to be right.
Try a small gunsmith phillips.
It will come off and it will be worth the effort.

Thanks Bill. You're right, the knife looks to get a nice slim profile without the clip.

How is a gunsmith phillips different from a Craftsman...or any other phillips?

Finally got the last of those #$%$# screws off the clip. All of the threads were coated, so this one had locking compound added at some point (not necessarily by Spyderco).

Works much better for me now. I don't mind the clip on my Delica or Michael Walker Ltwt, but my everday carry is in the pocket, unclipped, and the Wegner Jr is that much more compact now...even has 3 stylish designer holes, ala Viele

If anyone have a locking compound solvent to recommend, I'd still like to know for the next knife I try this on. Thanks.

Way to go Longden !!!!!
Got that turkey off, huh ?
I wish Spyderco would supply screws to fill those "designer holes" left by clip removal.
The existing screws are too long without the space caused by the clip's thickness.
BTW, I have two Wegner juniors and both are clipless

Hello,

IMHO the Wegner Junior IS the best folding knife in his category with or without its clip !!

It's very solid (thanks to its silverback) and user friendly (thanks to its ergonomy) !

Unfortunatly it will be discontinuated...

So jump on it while you can !!!

Cheers,
JM

A small Centofante-ish Spydie plate to cover the hole would do justice to my (admittedly ham-handed) efforts.

Wonder if this is something Spyder-folks can accomodate since they send out screws to the screw-less.

Bill: You have two? Are they plain-edge and combo?

Nemo: Really unfortunate that these are being discontinued..I think the reasons have been hashed over already on another thread. As a Spydie newcomer, I was confused by the visual similarities between Pro-Grip, Pro-Venator and the Wegner Jr. It's not until you hold them in your hands and also examine the details that the differences become more apparent. Oh well, such is the law of the jungle and evolution..

Longden, I have the full and was not much interested in the junior. Then I picked up the little guy in a multi knife deal. Its a combo edge and I absolutely love it! It has become one of my everyday carries. I was unaware they are being discontinued and will definitely pick up a least one more before they disappear.
