Clip, schmipp... who needs it?

I have avoided buying some really nice customs because they don't have clips. A 3 - 5 oz knife moving around in the pocket drives me nuts. Small knives, I put them in my watch pocket, but even they can slip out when I'm sitting. Clips are a Must!

Depends on the knife. Southard size & weight? I'm definitely clipping it. Traditional SAK/Kiwi/Air size? Most definitely just going in the pocket.

There's a place for both. Obviously, wearing slacks or (some) khakis with a clip is not really an option, or at least a faux pas, and so smaller clipless knives are the way to go.

edit: Oh, but also: I have on occasion found that clips can make knives MORE prone to being lost, at least in the back pocket. I recall having my Persian 75mm clipped to the back pocket of some khakis and on a few instances finding as I was sitting down that it was barely hanging on, only a few millimeters from being lost.

I'll only carry a modern folding knife clipped to my pocket. One reason is that they're usually too big to carry loose (since I also carry a slipjoint and my cell phone in the same pocket). The other is that most modern knives are so easy to open that I wouldn't want it loose and flopping around in my pocket for fear of it opening up.

I like the clip.
I keep other things in my pockets and hate having to dig for a knife.
Besides, most of my life I lived in Massachusetts where a knife in your pocket is considered a "concealed weapon".
The clip keeps the knife partly visible, so most police would consider that leagal.
I've carried this way for the last 20 years, or so and it's like second nature for me to deploy my knife.
Once and a while I'll carry a "clipless" knife in the back pocket under my wallet, but if I'm in a situation where I need to use my blade often, I carry a blade with a clip.

Definitely carry clipped. To each their own but by having it clipped access is significantly easier and faster, plus the likelihood of it slipping out of your pocket is greatly diminished. And for me it makes room for all the other crap I carry, if it wasn't clipped my pocket would feel too full and unorganized.

No clips here except on the Millies and Paras that I carry IWB. I leave those on but remove others. My BMs and Emersons that get everyday carry just ride down in my RFP. I've carried that way for 59 years now and I've never had a folder fall out or get lost. The only thing that's ever slipped out of place was a BRKT City Knife that was my fault for carrying it in a pocket sheath that was too large for the knife.

'Course, I don't carry much when I go out so my RFP is a dedicated knife pocket. Keys in LFP, wallet in LRP, still got one empty pocket. Kahr is IWB right side or in a paddle holster right side, cellphone (if I carry one) is in an Otter Box case w/ belt clip at 10:00.

Personally I love the clip. I can't have my knife bouncing around in my pocket. It's even worse when the knife falls sideways and all of a sudden, I have this weird bulge from my pocket!

Your knife gets you that excited huh?

I have one knife with a clip (actually it had a clip) but I removed it. It is a Kershaw Tremor (big dang knife) that I do not EDC. I use it as a utility knife to trim bushes, and other heavy work. My EDC is usually my #6 Opinel which I can hardly tell is in my pocket unless I stick my hand in to get some change out. When I carry my other "slippies" I can tell by the weight that they are there when needed. Have never had one slip (pun intended) out of my pocket and get lost, or open up on it's own. I have noticed other people carrying knives with a visible clip, and therefore opens up a conversation about knives. What works for you may not work for me, but I am glad it works for you is my stand on the matter. If we were all the same, think how dull knife collecting would be.

Blessings,

Omar
