Clip vs. Spear Point

Ah, but your math is off as this is a necro thread! Kid is probably 19 by now as it's been 4 years since the op.

Don't worry. I was excitedly reading the thread, formulating my response, as i went through this exact dilemma when considering the recon series. Then, I saw a longtime banned member had posted. Checked the date. We should all be checking dates on threads but it doesn't always happen. Especially on these fridays after a long week.

And just to add to the discussion, another reason I would go with the recon spear point is the stronger tip. For the long gone op's intended tasks, it makes the most sense on a supposedly bomb proof knife. I just figured out over use that when in the outdoors, I don't need to have a bomb proof folder that sacrifices function (hand not close to cutting edge for detail work) over a feature I don't need in a folder (triad lock). Out in the woods, I usually have a pm2 or Pacific salt as my modern folder (with a SAK) and of course a fixed blade. If you truly care about the strength of your folding knife lock, you wouldn't have one. It'll be a fixed blade.

Yup. I should have been more complete. Drop points were introduced later in the thread. General usage eclipses specialized uses. IMHO a good stout 90-100mm drop point with a flat grind is probably the most useful blade shape out there. Possibly with a puukko coming in second.
