Clips and your Cars Paint

OK, How many of you have scratches in your cars paint job at hip level just behind the drivers door? Right Rear pocket carry and tight parking spots have left a few on my car.

I was wondering if I was the only one. Then I started to notice that more than a few people who I know carry spyderco's had some of same marks.

What about taking the finish off wooden dinning room chairs... ever had the happen?

I usually carry a clipped knife in each pocket. Scratches appear behind the door on the body and the inside door panel. rico

Cars, furniture, moulding, bent clips...I now remove all clips as soon as they arrive. The handles feel better without them anyway.

I haven't had many problems over the years carrying in front pockets. Lately though, I've been playing a lot of pool. Unfortunately, front pocket carry of a Clipit during that activity is absolutely ruinous to both the pool table and the clip. I cringe every time I lean into the table to make a shot, hear the grating sound of metal on metal, and realize that I forgot to transfer the knife to a back pocket before I started playing.

If you saw what I drive, you wouldn’t care...:D

I bought my Toyota brand new off the showroom floor in 1990, 200,000 miles later and having never seeing the inside of a garage it still runs like new.

A few clip scratches from my knives only add more character.

I have more of a problem of cars & trucks doing more damage to my clips than the other way around. I only had my Microtech LCC for 2 days before the clip snagged on the steering wheel getting out and bent the darn thing straight out form the handle.

P.S.
On the other hand, this is really funny when it happens to your buddies knife....try not to laugh at the time though, its just bad knife manners.

WTFover, same happened to me the first weekend I had the Military. Maybe that's why although the knife should be one of my favorites based on its size, design and lightweight I do not carry it often. (I prefer right rear pocket carry or belt horizontal sheath carry for personal weird reasons).

Thank God!!! I thought I was a total idiot and the only one who has done this. I am so glad to hear that I am not alone.

WTFOver,

I did this last summer to the door of my truck as I walked along the side of the vehicle before getting in and while out camping. My Military dragged alongside the body panel just behind the drivers door leaving a huge scratch from the clip. Glad I'm not the only one to do it too.

The old style Delica and Endura models with integral plastic clips, don't scratch like this.

It was in my right front pocket but both cause & effect were the same. My dining room chairs have been spared but we have some cheap white plastic lawn chairs that have taken a real mauling. ;)

Good to know we are not alone!

For all the advantages of the clip, in my experience
the negatives (as mentioned above) sometimes outweigh them!

I have several variations of carry to try and avoid the damage caused by clips-

1. Carry my knife inside of my pants clipped on waist band. This will put the clip under my belt and keeps it protected.

2.Back pocket carry-ONLY if I am not moving around too much or in an area where it could easily be lost.

3. If I am sure I will not need to access my knife too quickly, I'll clip it to the top of my Cowboy boots under my pant leg (this is good if you are in an area with alot of security and don't want to draw too much attention to yourself i.e. a movie theater).

4. If the knife is small enough-like a Native for instance, I will just unclip it and drop it in my pocket. This doesn't work with a larger knife like the Police, or my Benchmade AFCK (for me anyway).

5. Lanyards are handy also. I will remove the clip and put a short leather thong on my knife. I leave it hanging out of the top of my pocket, and can easily grab it and pull the knife out. You don't want to have a loop on the thong or it will catch on things too easily and pull the knife out at the worst of times!

6. Another place that I use the clip with good success is at the neck of a polo-style shirt or in an inside pocket of a sport coat or jacket.

7. Last but not least-I will make a 'necklace' out of a leather thong and clip the knife to it. I then drop the knife underneath the front of my shirt like a neck-knife.

Just some thoughts on the subject.... :)

I have some of the character marks on my pickup. I've noticed the new wire clips aren't nearly as violent on paint. ;)

Don't have any scratches on my own car yet, but I always try to be extremely careful when looking at new ones! "You scratch, you buy!" :)

I try to be EXTREMELY careful with entering and exiting my vehicle. I do not want to scratch my baby up!!

Which "baby", the car or the Spyder?:D

Oh, yeah. I prefer to carry clipped to my right front pocket, but after scratching my car...within a year of having it repainted, I'm trying different knifes and carry positons. I hate to let the knife rattle around with the keys and change in the bottom of my pocket, though.

I'm still suprised that I drag my hip that close to the car as I'm getting in. I've also bent a clip out after it caught on the steering wheel cover.

About three weeks ago I was squeezing in between the two cars in the garage and put about a four inch scratch in the side of my Honda Odyssey all the way to bare metal with my Manix. Fortunately, it's six years old now or I would probably have been sick. I've been carrying a clipped folder for years, and this was by far the worst that I've done.

I religiously hold my hand over the clip whenever I'm passing close to a car in the garage now.

My insurance company had to total one vehicle from knife scratches. That's why I only carry slipjoints these days.

Seriously, I have come close, but so far, no major scratches. I really am carrying more slipjoints these days though.
