Clips

View attachment 2438920I think the Clip on the regular Spyderco Para 3 does a good job, but holy cow it is not deep carry.

Beautiful picture!

BTW, this might be an opportunity to talk about something else I hate: clip placement being subservient to the placement of lanyard holes. I know some people like lanyards/fobs and I appreciate them on some fixed blades (especially the nice ones done by Gary W. Graley Gary W. Graley ). On folders especially, I prefer when the attachment points use the back spacer instead of going through the scales.

Thanks sir and a knife I recently received but have put up for sale is one by North Arm called the Lynx, this father and son company did an amazing job at adding a lanyard attachment point at the end of the handle. Now other people have similar type setups, I've even modified a few knives to have this, but they made it so that when you slip the paracord into one side, it easily pushes around and out without any struggle to make it do that! brilliant ! ;) I wrote them an email commending them on how well they made that and he appreciated the shout out.

And continuing along that thought line about lanyard attachment points, CRK has their nifty little lanyard pin dealybobthingy which you are hard pressed to get 550 paracord through, the way I do it is to remove a bit of the inner strands at one end and cut the outer casing at a steep angle so you can get it started into the pin and then you can forceable pull the cord through. Here's mine with 550 paracord through, a wide diamond knot, a Titanium Crusaders Cross bead followed by three snake knots.

Modern knives sport clips, some fancy, some not so well done. Now the ones that I like are those that use screws coming up through the scale and into the bottom of the clip attaching point, so on the outside the view of the clip is smooth and uninterrupted, classy looking. Which can be a little harder if you wanted to switch sides, if the knife has that option, but once changed you don't have to mess with it again.

This Artisan is one such folder that has this type of clip, very sleek looking

I've seen some very high priced folders that didn't have this feature, to me when they pull down prices that exceed $1k I think that there should be a little more thought into those clips, but, that's just me.

as this Arno Bernard folder also has the hidden screws for the clip, again, nicely done guys

So, lets hear about your favourite type of clips??

The problem with hidden screw clips is if the get loose. My Brian Tighe small Twist Tighe had this happen, the screws are proprietary, big PITA.

Luckily my new R&H Tasca 2 came with a bit for the proprietary screws.

I agree that is one of the drawbacks of hidden screws and compound that with the unique hardware only makes the situation worse

I understand why companies come up with a standard clip and throw it on all of their knives, but its nice when they design one for the specific knife its going on.

Two nice aftermarket clips. The milled one is flat and comfortable to grip but is a little snug on the pocket. The stamped clip is a little less comfortable to grip but has the perfect resistance to pocketing and drawing. I like them both. 5E03CFA9-9C03-4DB8-98D2-ECC851F6E896.jpegCDC7C143-5A7B-4E29-828C-E0B33A764BD7.jpeg

I like deep or fairly deep carry clips, especially when I'm wearing khakis or slacks. I have only one truly "shallow" carry knife, my Biryukov #12, and there are no aftermarket clips available. I like the knife enough to deal with this, but I just have to be careful about what I wear, and that my shirt covers the part sticking out of the pocket. It does have a proprietary pivot and standoff screw, but thankfully the clip screws are external and T6. When I got my Biryukov #7, it came with the proprietary bit which is nice. My R&H came with the proprietary bit, but honestly a flathead screwdriver would work fine.

One of the things I dislike about Spyderco clips is how long they are, and while the first gen deep carry clips from MXG were slightly shorter, I put the newer shorty clips on all of mine now.

I dislike single screw clips as even with loctite they tend to loosen quickly.

I've been very happy with the MXG clips and the different varieties they offer. I remember them having short and long versions available. I haven't looked at their site in a while but sometimes, they'll fit on more than just what they say. It just depends on the alignment.

However, a good spring clip like the ones Tom Mayo uses functions perfectly.

Does anybody make a decent spring-tempered "deep carry" clip for a PM2? I don't particularly care what it's made of, but it needs to be able to take some abuse.

I bought a titanium clip for my PM2 on the "auction site" and it got caught on a piece of machinery in my shop when I squeezed past it, and the clip bent.

Never had that problem with the clip on my Buck 174 Mayo Cutback.

Both MXG and Lynch make great clips for Spydercos

I truly do not know. So will go by others recommendations.

In my experience in designing a clip it is difficult to get the balance right between retention, how easy it slides in and out of the pocket and as little obtrusive as possible.

Thats the clip, then throw in designing a clip to minimise hotspots on the knife while using it in heavy cuts.

All those factors have resulted in my first knives to appear as if the clip was an afterthought but actually not. I now use 3d machined clips that strike a good balance in my opinion.

Good luck on your search.

One thing that bugs me is that the clips I've gotten from these companies do not switch to flush-fitting screws and/or just use the mushroom-head stock screws. That means having screws poke up into the loop-over. Just the other day, I got annoyed by my Smock snagging on the top of my pocket.

I started a thread about this over on the Spyderco forum but for the most part, it's going over like a lead balloon.
