This is a good mix of some of the possibilities with maple burl. These are all maple with the exception of the first block which is spalted oak. The white one is the normal maple piece. The multicolored pieces came from dead or injured maple burls. The ones with orange or red colors are what we call redheart. This color change occurs around an injury or when a maple begins to die from the inside out. The darker ones are from spalting which is caused by fungus that invades the dead wood.
