Closed blade retention on Para 2

One of my gripes about the first gen paramilitary was that the closed retention was not very consistent from knife to knife. Some were great, and some were way to easy to come open.

How is it on the para 2?

Mine has a very strong detent. Almost too strong at first, but after some use it has loosened up a bit, and is now perfect. Very secure. I haven't heard a single complaint about a weak detent in the Para 2.

I think it should be more consistent in the Para 2 as they went to the old stand-by, the ball detent as opposed to a different mechanism I can't recall the name of in the original Para.

Very strong. That includes in the locked position. Some of my friends cant even close the knife. Its not for everyone. But it is very secure. Yet will flick open very easily..

Interesting to learn there is a ball/detent in this newer model! I wish I could find some pics of the whole thing dismantled.....

I will echo what others have said, mine has a very strong detent. As for the detent on the Para 1, it's called a milled tang detent.

The detent on my Para 2 is perfect. Not too strong, not too weak. Super smooth and easy to flick open but wont open accidentally on you if you shake the handle even with a good amount of force.

I like the detent on the Para 2. As others have said, it's strong but not too strong. What I like to do when flicking it open is to grab it by the blade near the hole and pinch the blade against the handle so the blade moves past the detent just as I'm spyder droping it open. Allows me to flick it open without using very much inertial force, since I already have overcome the detent, so it doesn't put much, if any, stress on the knife.

Mine has the perfect amount of resistance that i can preload a bunch of pressure on it via the spyder hole, and when i finally overcome that tension, the blade just flies out faster than an A/O. It's perfect :D

Well, my 2 Para2's have very different detents, one very strong, one barely having a detent. The strong detent has a solid lockup, the other has vert bladeplay.

I would send to spyderco if it has a bad detent and vertical bladeplay.

Mine flicked open perfect out the box and was easy to close. Slightly off center blade that I'm unsure how to get centered but perfect function.

Strong retention on mine.
As a matter of fact, my Para 2 is my all time favorite folder.
I've had quite a few, Sebenza, SERE 2000, Sage 1, Griptilian, etc.
The Para 2 is the perfect knife for me.

I have a first gen Para that has next to zero closed blade retention, yet it's very difficult to unlock once it's open. I don't carry it any longer because of this problem. The knife has gone to Spyderco's warranty dept. twice, and the problem has not been fixed.

On the other hand, I own a FG/D2 Para that has strong closed retention, and a perfect lock-up and release from lock-up. This knife is near flawless, with glass smooth opening and closing. It seems that the early Para's varied from knife to knife in smoothness and overall function.
