Well here is the result of an epic adventure. A large multi-bar Migration period sword that died in the quench followed by opportunity to have fun with my own subdued version of fantasy. What came out was Cloud-Spike (or for my fellow Tolkien-Geeks.. Shathur-Zirak in Dwarvish and named after Mount Cloudy-Head in the Misty Mountains). The blade is 7 bars of 1084/15n20. Some twisted bars and some straight laminate. I chose a particularly bad week weather-wise to do the welding and ended up with some weld flaws that came apart in the quench causing me to cut the blade and then 'fish-mouth weld' the longer piece into the blade shown here. The fittings are wrought iron with some carving and runes and are based on the Viking period Type C hilt. The runes say 'Roush Made' in Tolkien's Dwarvish.

The blade is 18" long and weighs just about 1 pound.

Thanks for looking!

Thank you John.

Here is a picture I forgot to add that does a better job showing the topography of the pattern weld...

Thanks guys....

Here is what it looks like in the hands of a hobbit size fellow. The cut on his eye is unrelated. :-)

That came out awesome Scott! That pic of your son is great. My kids (2yrs and 4yrs) always ask to hold my knives when I get one finished up, its pretty cool.

quick email Peter Jackson that pic, he might have use for it in the last Hobbit movie! awesome!

I would give anything to see the weapons from his hobbit movies replaced with something like this. Why? Why? Why did they have to go the route of tacky fantasy crap with those dwarvish weapons??

Thanks again for the comments folks. I wish everybody could see and hold this in person. My pictures haven't really captured it. Not to mention the feel of it in the hand. Despite it's size.. the proportions and hand-feel make it seem like a far larger weapon...

That is awesome!!! Odin himself would be proud to carry that! :)
