Club Ugly

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Many of these knives I wouldn't call ugly. This topic doesn't seem to be consistent with the spirit of the forum. I could make a quick quip about merging this topic with the rough rider topic ;) but not all of those are ugly (maybe just most of them j/k ;) ) and there are lot of folks that like those knives. My own interests seem to have a minor representation. Some of the old knives that I prize would be ugly junk to many others. Some would prefer to buff out the old knives to make them shiny. Then they'd be ugly to me. One look at Ebay clearly shows that most people don't agree with me. And new knives seem to have more and more embellishment and fanciful handles. For me, the more traditional appearance is preferred. Knives are tools but I think that practical utility and tradition can be much more appealing than fancy embellishment.

Anyhoo... I'll play along. This knife is a very nice tool and would take care of a lifetime of cutting needs but it's by no means a looker. The lock release looks like 1970s style electronic switch... and it's proudly displayed on the mark side of the knife. :)

Jake, that knife is just awesome! How does the lock work?!

To cover your previous point, I don't see why this thread is un-Porch-like. This is a celebration of traditional knives! One of the greatest things about traditional knives is their long history has brought them through thousands of iterations and styles. Some of which could be called timeless and classic, others not so much. We see pictures of beautiful knives so often that we overlook the humbler, plainer or in the case of that 25, less fortunate knives. I wanted to make this thread in the spirit of recognizing these knives and yes, occasionally having a laugh.
So, if someone sees a knife that they like the looks of in this thread, then yes someone out there in the internet must not share your tastes. I'm sorry. I've seen quite a few knives in here that I think are knockouts (e.g. Tsar's Dixon X-TRA Barlow). Would we have seen these without this thread? I probably wouldn't have and that'd be a shame because I want to see all the knives, not just the pretty ones.

I know it's in good fun. I know you're a good guy. And it'll remain fun until someone posts a photo of one of my treasured knives. j/k ;) :p :D There used to be more critical discussion when I first joined the forum and a lot more involvement of custom knife makers with insight into the manufacturing of knives. A lot of good discussions and I learned a lot.

The main blade is the only one that locks. It's sort of a liner lock. The switch pushes the lock bar away from the tang and releases the blade.

At some point in history someone thought this was a good business move. Maybe during an acid trip in the 60s? Not sure how or when it came into my possession. No tang stamp but has Made in USA in faded gold letters on the scale. Either way she ain't very pretty.

Seems like a harmless enough thread, Jake, more tongue-in-cheek than anything else. I kinda like all of the knives I posted else I would not have bought them. But for the purposes of the thread, I knew they would fit in quite well with the other knives that tend to stretch aesthetics a bit.

Thanks, Connor! I love some workhorses and those look like they can both get job done without hesitation.

Tsar, you're a heavy hitter in any thread and you definitely brought your A-game once again. That Case had me roaring! I'm with Will, someone was definitely sweating it out from the night before when they drilled that. I happen to really like the bone on that Dixon Xtra. Looks like that stuff I suggested Charlie call Re-Bone.

Will, do I have to beg? Cause I'll beg. Look we both know that just talking about such a specimen and not providing pics is cruel. This thread needs, and mean needs to see this beauty. Please Will, please. Do it for the Club.

Fausto, I'm happy to report that your knife helped inspire this Club! That makes you a founding Member and an Officer!

Hickory, I've got one below that can top that! Though the crooked shield on yours adds a certain je ne sais quois that mine lacks. Again, with the genius multi-function spatula things! I need this.

Wazu, keep it up! That is some officer grade content right there. I have so many questions about this knife. What is boxed beef and how is it different than the beef restaurants get in boxes? How could that thing possibly be comfortable? Most pressingly, why is Colorado Boxed Beef in FL?

GT, looks like a sweet little user to me. Welcome to the Club.

And now for your consideration:

Here's a kitsch little number from Germany.

Here's a Colonial to go with Tsar's Sharp.

And finally my little 0.25 cent special to go along with the atco:

As far as using goes, that colonial stockman is probably better as it has the good ol' carbon steel.
I think I'm gonna have to get some better pics of that [/URL[/URL

As I try to build my Wall of RR Smooth Tobacco Bone, I find myself disagreeing with your assessment of their knives more and more by the day. :p

Your Camillus might not be the belle of the ball but it's a heck of a knife anyway.

If I'm being totally honest (as supratentorial inferred, a lot of the "ugly" knives are probably all sorts of pretty to their owners), I really like the XTRA Barlow too. :D

I'm surprised Colonial held on to more of that "burnt stag-like" Delrin monstrosity. You'd think they pawned it all off on that Sharp USA order. I'm watching another 270 right now as a potential gift for another member. :D

Not that it matters, but the tobacco bone is one of their better looking covers in my opinion. Probably one of my top 2 or 3 choices from them. I also don't mind their yellow synthetic even though the color patchy. Colts black stag is surprisingly nice on the few that I've seen. Some of the others are very unappealing to me.

But it's just a matter of personal preferences.

Your Camillus might not be the belle of the ball but it's a heck of a knife anyway.

Thanks :)

Dr M I was begging YOU not to force my hand...but.

So, I told you didn't I?? Nice load of verdigris on this too due to brass bleed from the pins & liners (rather common on CASE knives with Stag or light bone but it can be seen and smelled... :barf::barf:on others, say GEC too....:D:grumpy:)

You asked for it, Will

Here's one from the Case custom plant in Pakistan
...
I wonder if I'll ever see a canoe pattern that I DON'T think has redeeming social value??:p
That knife looks very similar to a Rough Rider Christmas canoe I'm planning to order this weekend! :o

They make a lot of crude copy knives out there :barf:

Mind you, I'm sure there are excellent artisan makers and small local knife-making concerns as well.

Thank you Will, thank you! What a statement piece from Case. A soul stirring statement of funk and pregnant guppies! I love it. A piece that powerful could only be kept by the mightiest of connoisseurs. Therefore, I think you're just the man to be our CLUB's Imperator of Funky Stag for surely none could top that. We're still working on making up some sashes and imposing hats for our officers but we'll let you know as soon as they're done.

Ahh Wazu, I've heard whispers of Case's ultra-exclusive Pakistani custom shop. Of course I was never able to confirm or deny it's existence as it is so exclusive of course that no one at Case had ever heard of it. I can only imagine the amazing stroke of fortune that brought this piece into your hands and ultimately our little Club. Really great stuff Wazu, if you have any interest in the officer class membership simply make up a really grand and imposing title and we'll make sure the proper paperwork is filed.

ArrowHD, I think those are both really great. I mean Green bone and a caplifter? Sign me up! Nothing could detract from that beauty of a Remington, in fact I've always thought signed knives had a lot of charm. Especially after seeing Earl go globetrotting.

T.Knotts, I can think of no better place for that knife. Welcome to the CLUB! I think I've heard that called End of the Day acrylic (and probably a few other things too...). Some of it looks quite good. In any case I think it's very cool and I'm really glad you shared it here.

Tsar, I'm not too sure where they got all that Burnt Stag Delrin, maybe there was a fire sale. The knife itself is in good shape so I think this Colonial of mine maybe become another subject for the mad modder Glenbad. I just can't think of what to do with it exactly. It's a pretty sturdy stockman at about 4.25", so maybe micarta and some swedges? Lemme know if you have any suggestions guys.

Dr-M Thank you , thank you but I'll pass on the sashes and hats option.. lack of experience see :D Good job I'm the other side of the Atlantic ha ha!

The knife feels good, provided you don't look at the horrible thing......;)

This, to my eye, is the ugliest knife in my collection. Case called it "Watermelon" but it just looks pink to me. It's really a fine sowbelly but it's just soooo pink......

I'll have to ponder it for a while :devilish:

They also had a "bubba gum" series that was a brighter pink.
I'm a huge fan of the Case sowbelly stockman, and didn't think it would be possible to make it look bad to me, but maybe I'm wrong!
My first thought when I saw the photo was, "Those covers remind me of diseased gums!" Maybe Jake's bubba gum doesn't refer to what I originally thought it did - Bubba's gums, anyone?!?

I can't believe I'd forgotten all about those Camillus slide-locks. I remember thinking they were a great idea and might be the one and only be-all and end-all. Maybe they were too costly for me at the time.
