CMG Infinity Task Light, worth the money?

So,

I am planning on buying a CMG Infinity Task Light.

Then, I read that it has nowhere near the power of the Photon......

What's the story?

I bought three yellows. My blue or white photon microlight slaughtered the CMG infinity yellow in terms of output. But you gotta love the knurled aluminum case and the ability to use AA batteries.

The Arclight seems like a viable answer to the relative failings of the CMG Infinity. Gives up burn time for more output.

Photon's brightness over Infinity is only good for 1 hour and after that first hour Infinity continue to give out consistent useable beam of light for 42 hours while Photon becomes dimmer and dimmer.

My Photon II and Infinity continous "ON" observations;
1. Photon II is brighter than Infinity during the first (1) hour only.
2. During the second hour Photon II is a little brighter or as bright as Infinity.
3. Photon II's useable beam of light is good for 5 hours.
4. After 5 hours Infinity is brighter than Photon.
5. Infinity's lightbeam is consistent and useable for 42 hours.
6. It is a pain to deal with 4 small screws and delicate bend of LED leads to replace the not available anywhere CR2016 batteries of Photon II.
7. Twist the head to separate it from barrel and drop the replacement easy to buy anywhere 1AA battery, then twist the head to attach to barrel of Infinity.

If you do not mind fibbling with small screws and delicate LED leads for 1 hour of bright light and 5 hours of total useable light, then Photon II is your light.

If you like not very bright but consistently useable beam of light for 42 hours with easy to buy anywhere and replace 1AA battery, that's Infinity.

Arclight is also a good flashlight using 1AAA alkaline battery for 5 hours of consistent bright light (brighter than Photon), with easy to replace (twist head) way of replacing battery.

Hi Marion,

If you're planning to get the CMG Infinity you should first take a look at the ARC LED Flashlight running on an AAA battery and "cranking" the 1.5 Volts up to 4-4.5 Volts by using a "DC to DC, step-up inverter".

Just go see:

http://store.yahoo.com/flashlight/

I checked http://www.brightguy.com and he sells them for $21.50 if I remember it right and he's supposed to get a new batch around June 15.

If you want to get one of those ARC's let me know perhaps you can get me one or two also, the scouts will love them I think.

Best Scouting wishes from Holland,

Bagheera

I have a silver CMG Infinity Task Light in "bright white", and am disappointed in its output. Found it uncomfortable to wear around the neck or carry in the pocket. Much prefer the Photon II.
The clip rusts very easily, and is hard to remove.

Marion,
Save your money. Email me your address, and I'll send you this one, still have the clip and the original package-but I'm keeping the lanyard

Picked one up yesterday at Brigade Quartermasters. Not at all impressed. Will probably return it.

FWIW. May check in to the Arc light.

Hoah! (Its an Army thing!)

I was kinda upset about the infinities output, until I realized that it has a dimmer. The tighter you twist the end, the brighter it gets! It gets bright enough for me. I think I'm gonna get somthing else for keychain EDC use, though. SOmething with "continuous on" mode. I think it was worth the money because of the battery life. If I had the chance to pick again, I would get something else due to its bulk.. I'll have to try out that Arc light. It seems really groovy!

I have both the Infinity (beats the heck out of my old Mag solitairs) and the Photon. I like them both for different reasons.

Photon is good and bright but only for the first hour compared to the Infinity as someone has already pointed out.

The push button works well for short periods of time but the photon little plastic stay on switch is a little kluggy. You need a good nail on your finger to turn it on. As mentioned, the battey replacement is not fun.

The Infinity is good for general purpose lighting. It's small enough for me to carry in my pocket, got a AA battery where I can get anywhere and has 40+ hours of useful light. The clip attaches to my hat and is a nice hands free feature. It's waterproof (can't say that about the photon) and has a nice feel for a small task light.

That said, I do carry the photon on my key chain and use it a lot when I need a quick light for short tasks.

For longer immediate tasks, I always have the Infinity with me. If I need some hands free I use the Infinity clipped to my hat or between my teeth.

For anything else I grab my Longlight or Printon Tec head lamp (4 LED's).
