I see plenty of people hollow grinding now days Bill. In fact I've read enough to make me think I'm missing the boat a little. Having slid into a making a lot of kitchen knives I just haven't really had the need myself. But I have a 10" wheel I picked up with my grinder that I'd like to put into use someday...
I don't remember how long it is but Nick W has a video out there where someone must have commented he can't grind freehand or something. All I remember is him saying that someone called him out and him showing how he can grind a bowie freehand and I'm pretty sure it was quick. Probably not in 60 seconds and I don't know if it was up to his level of quality, but I've seen some impressive grinding speeds from him and others at his level. The problem is its almost always a demonstration and I doubt most put as much effort into grinding when demonstrating techniques. No real need to when you're showing someone how to hold a knife when grinding. Something that just occurred to me is that I bet Andy at fiddleback has some good insight into this.
Regarding the CNC grinder, several years ago I saw a video about Chris Reeves where towards the end of it he was showing the guy interviewing him a new machine he was working on. It was a CNC stone wheel wet grinder that he was going to use to grind bevels if I remember correctly. I know he said it was his own invention. I'll see if I can find the video, it was interesting and I wonder if he ever got it working well enough to put it into production.

EDIT:
I think this is the video. I didn't have time to watch it all but I scanned it until I thought I saw the machine I recalled and I think he is talking about it around 7:30 into the video. Either way its a fascinating watch and reminded me why I respect him.
I think I might be a below average maker because it takes me a lot longer than that. Would one of you guys be willing to demonstrate a 60 second basic hand grind for me? I would love to see a video of that.
In fact, if anyone wants to come show me in person at my shop I'll offer a permanent full time position here at our company to anyone who can do a good finished hand grind in under ten minutes.
