Who can do CNC milled bevels on a waterjet blank? I'm trying to figure out how to keep my production in the US rather than outsourcing.

Brian

While it's "possible" to CNC the bevels on a blade, 99% (or more) of the bevels used a grinder to make. I've seen where a few folks have used a milling machine to mill the bevels by blocking the blade to the correct angle for a mill.

Just so we're clear, I'm taking about production level stuff, 300-500 pieces. I think those would be done on something other than grinders. How does SurviveKnives do it? Maybe I should ask Guy. He might tell me.

Call Aldo's son Peter. He may have a good lead for you.

I'll call him. Thanks

Sorry about that Brian - had I looked at the number of your posts, I should have known you knew all about grinding/knife making. I didn't realize you were talking about production - a whole different ball of wax. Not sure, but I'll bet they are a form of automated grinding. Let us know what you find out - it's an interesting question.

Guys, I understand how it's done.

I want names of people or companies that will make the bevels on my run of knives.

Brian,

Call me. I need to ask you a few questions to clarify your needs. I think I have the information you want.

Chuck

Chuck, thanks. I'll call you later today. It's been a heck of a night on the ambulance tonight (which is why I'm still awake at 0230) but I'll definitely call you when I get home wake up from a nap.

You can call now if you want. I still have a few more hours of work. Press 1 on the phone to get through to me.

Chuck

I guess you didn't get to post 7 ?

Sorry Sam. I didn't see your post when I replied. Too much late night posting for me. You'd think I'd have learned my lesson by now.

Chuck, I left you a message. I'll try again later today. I'm going to call Larkin today as well.

I have learned a LOT from this thread- and the linked thread. It would be interesting to see price on 200 blades for that double grinding stuff.

Double disk, plus bevels, heat treat, stone wash, and laser cutting will be roughly $14-15/knife before materials cost for a roughly 1"x6" knife 1/8" stock. Looking at 20CV, but have to figure out cost. I can't quite get the minimum run on a 24"x48" sheet.

Thanks Brian - at $15/blade that's not a bad price. If a person totals up all the belts, HT'ing costs - and that's not even considering the time cost. Not a bad price. Thank you for posting info - just added to my meager store of knowledge.
