I made these up for a ranger hawk and a BIG bowie Steve made. some serious steel.
The bowie sheath is rawhide over veggitan with Elk fringes and painted in the plains style. It's my take on a picture of an early sheath that came with the order.
The hawk sheath is the same construction. Navajo made silver beads and antler slides on the ties for the haft and a Black Bear claw closer. The hawk sheath pic is a bit off and the abalone hadn't been sewn on yet.

Best regards

Thanks guys, I appreciate the kind comments. I enjoy making these covers for Steves work, doing it from measurements is a bit nerve wracking but so far they have all fit ;-)
These rawhide pieces are a ton of work but the outcome is worth the effort.

Wow, I love that hawk cover. I'm going to look into leatherworking of that sort. Any tips for where to start?

Hi there pullrich.
I'd try some basic sheaths to start with (unless you've done some leather work before) and for that you'll need some good quality 8 oz veggitan tooling leather (Tandys has OK leather if you have one near you) some good quality hand sewing thread, some dye if you want it, Feibings is the best IMO also at Tandys. I drill my holes with my drill press and use a needle, others use a sewing awl but good luck getting it through 5 layers etc. There are a few tutorials on the sheath forum that will help you sort out the steps. I'd be glad to answer any questions you have. You can email me at songofthewoods@hotmail.com

Right on  I think there's a LW store nearby I may drop in, check out the forum as you recommended, and see if I wanna even go in this direction.

One thing for sure, check the back of the veggitan as well as the front. They get quite a few loose back hides at LW/Tandy, at least up here. If you can get Wicket and Craig leather easily, it's the best. Tandy may have decent size scraps to start with.
