i fired up my homemade coal forge last night for first time and am using compressed air atm.

what would be a good size fan/ cfm rating to go with?

For bladesmithing you do not need a lot of blower but here is what I have on my coal forge's

This was my first blower for horseshoeing rigs coal forge, it is the same one you can get at Centaur Forge and pay more money for, http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/DAYTON-Shaded-Pole-Blower-2C647?Pid=search I put a rheostat (dimmer switch) on it so I could adjust the fan speed. This is a very good blower I have been using mine for over 15 years the only thing I will say is I added a piece of fine mesh hardware cloth at the mounting flange as I was getting some marble size piece of coal getting into the squirrel cage and bent a couple of the fins.
