My son needs a piece of coal for a science presentation tomorrow. Does anybody know a maker in Iowa who still uses coal? If not, what stores might be likely to carry coal?

One day is pretty short notice.

I'd try calling grain and feed mills - co-op in your area
Some may sell it as heating fuel, some farmers in coal country used to feed coal to their pigs as a mineral supplement.

Do you have any railway museums, they may have some as display material for the steam era.

Or
find a coal fired power plant

None of the local farm stores carry any and all the blacksmiths aren't open until tomorrow. I've got a call in to a guy than runs a steam powered train, but not sure if the train is in the state. He move it from state to state all the time.

Train tracks, rail yard, look around outside a closed blacksmith shop, .....wait till tomorrow.

Why would a teacher assign a student to bring in something that's apparently near impossible to find?

There's a big pile of it at the power plant by the state fire training bureau in ames. It's a little ways away from you.

Hire Superman to un-squeeze a diamond.

After all, he’s Superman! I’m sure he can turn a diamond back into a lump of coal. :D

He ended up with a few pictures of coal, since they are just black rocks. He also took several pictures of modern clean coal power plants showing how much cleaner they are compared to the older coal plants. Oh, and of course a picture of a blacksmith working on an anvil next to a coal forge.
